Mindarie, whose first two foals are 2YO Stakes winners, has delivered Mogumber Park their best ever sale result when topping today’s Inglis Digital July (Early) Online Sale at $355,000, selling to Perth breeder Robert Bavcevic following a robust bidding duel.
The 8YO Mindarie (Safeguard) attracted interest from right across Australia much to the delight of her breeders and owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey.
“This is a big deal to us!” Lacey said.
“It’s the highest-priced horse we’ve ever sold, but it’s not just the amount, it’s that she is by our stallion, she was born on our property, we raced her, her foals were born here and her dam Clarecastle was virtually a blue hen in Western Australia, so she is WA through and through.
“So, to see her top a sale and draw so many bids from interstate was special for us.”
“When we first entered into this journey, Sinead Flannery advised us on a value and let’s just say she was bang on,” Colin Brown added.
“She also advised us to put her on the market early and she was bang on again.
“We cannot speak highly enough of the process and the support that Inglis – particularly Sinead – gave us.
“Sinead held our hand the whole way through, she took every phone call no matter what time and answered every question, she made us feel relaxed.
“It’s hard to let her (Mindarie) go as it’s an end of an era for us with the family, however financially it was the right decision.
“We wish the new owner every success with her, she’s only an 8YO and has already thrown two 2YO Stakes winners; she deserves every opportunity at stud.
“We will celebrate with a bottle of champagne tonight!”
Buyer Robert Bavcevic said he will consider his options with Mindarie before committing to a stallion for the upcoming breeding season.
“I quite enjoyed the bidding duel, I was trying to work out the tactics on how to beat the underbidders because she was a mare I really wanted to get.” Bavcevic said.
“Her credentials are very strong, two 2YO Stakes winners from her first two foals here in Perth, Do I Feel Lucky (Dirty Work) and Maria Lucia (Rommel).
“Her own dam produced nine winners from 10 foals, a Stakes winner and three other black-type performers.
“She’s the fourth mare for my broodmare band and I think that might do me for the moment,” Bavcevic said.
Equal second-top lot honours went to Summer Success (Savabeel) – who was offered in foal to Stay Inside – and multiple Stakes winner Pivotal Ten (Ten Sovereigns) who sold for $190,000 to Corumbene Stud and Cambridge Stud respectively.
Other significant results in today’s sale, which grossed $3,350,800, included Wollzeile ($115,000), Palmanova ($105,000) and Ms Catherine ($100,000), taking the number of $100,000-plus lots sold through Inglis Digital since the beginning of 2025 to 193.
2YO filly Sweet Leaf will be aimed at the Perth summer carnival, having been secured by Vahala Racing and SM & KB Bloodstock for $100,000.
Offered by trainers Brett and Georgie Cavanough, Sweet Leaf (Headwater) was an impressive maiden winner at Gunnedah and was a last start fourth at Rosehill behind boom colt Omolong.
“The plan is to get her ready for our summer carnival and target the Listed Placid Ark Stakes in November,” Kyle Sutherland said.
“She will spell in NSW and then go to Matthew Smith, who we have a good relationship with, to get ready for her 3YO preparation and she’ll stay with Matt until we can get her on a plane to Perth and transferred to Stefan Vahala’s stable.
“The priority for us is to ensure she has a decent spell so we’d prefer to wait for a flight than send her over in a truck immediately.
“We’re pretty excited, we think she will really suit the racing over here,” Sutherland added.
Attention now turns to the Inglis Digital July (Late) Online Sale, which will feature G2 winner and G1 Coolmore Classic runner-up Arctic Glamour.
The Ryan/Alexiou-trained mare retires to the breeding barn following an accomplished career, which netted more than $1 million in prizemoney and was highlighted by victories in the G2 Hot Danish Stakes and Listed Reginald Allen Quality, where she defeated subsequent five-time G1 winner Joliestar.
A dominant 4.3 length maiden winner at her 3YO debut over 1200m, Arctic Glamour was also Group placed on six occasions, including her 0.3 length 2nd to Lazzura in the G1 Coolmore Classic during this year’s Autumn Carnival, with the likes of Vivy Air, Verona Rose, Manaal, Savvy Hallie and Ole Dancer in arrears.
A $185,000 Inglis Premier purchase for her trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Arctic Glamour will be offered unreserved as a breeding prospect and will be available for inspection by appointment.
“We are very excited to have Arctic Glamour in the next sale,” said Inglis NSW Bloodstock Operations Manager Chris Russell.
“Anyone who has seen her at the races will know that she is a beautiful mare.
“She’s a granddaughter of one of the best sires on the planet in Tapit, out of a mare by possibly the greatest stallion of all time in Galileo and has no Danehill in her pedigree, so she is a very interesting prospect.”
The Inglis Digital July (Late) Online Sale will be held from July 24-29.
Entries will remain open until midnight on Wednesday July 22.
