Mossfun Claims $250,000 Inglis Nursery On Debut

Debutant Mossfun (Mossman x Eye For Fun) took home the lion’s share of the $250,000 prizemoney on offer on the RL Inglis Nursery over 1000m at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

A capacity field of 12 runners went to the barriers for the Inglis Race Series event that was eventually fought out by Mossfun and Dual Star, with only head splitting the pair on the line. They clocked 57.11 seconds for the lucrative 1000m dash.

Mossfun was one of only two yearlings purchased by Trevor Lobb of Emirates Park at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. The other was the $4,000,000 colt by Fastnet Rock from River Dove.

Bred by Dr I Duckworth, Heather McKinnon, Darren Pullman and Linda Duckworth, Mossfun was purchased out of Session II of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $85,000 from the draft of Fairview Park Stud.

Trevor Lobb used to work closely with Mossfun’s trainers John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes for Ingham Racing. Michael Hawkes is glad to have the old team back together getting quality winners.

“These colours are His Excellency’s son, Hussain, they have been great supporters, and Trevor (Lobb), it’s the old team back together and hopefully we can get a few more like this filly,” said Michael Hawkes.

“When she first came in we thought we had a nice filly on our hands. When she trialled, she trialled well and coming to the races today she was very professional and she will keep getting better as she gets older."

The team are likely to aim higher during the rich Sydney Autumn next year with the speedy filly.

"We will probably pull up stumps, freshen her up and head towards the autumn," Hawkes said.

All four previous winners of the Inglis Nursery have gone on to further stakes success on the track including Gr.2 VRC Sires’ Produce winner Twilight Royale and Gr.2 ATC Silver Slipper winner Chance Bye.

In addition to the race prizemoney on offer, the winning trainer of the Inglis Nursery received a set of Swarovski Optik EL 42 Swarovision binoculars valued at $3,000. The winning jockey and owner also received an exclusive piece of Antler Luggage.

Next year’s edition of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the sales source of Mossfun, will be held on 8, 9 & 10 April 2014, between Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill and Day One of the highly anticipated ‘The Championships’ at Royal Randwick.
