Muswellbrook debut for Dangerous Edition

AAP Racing - Tony White - Sunday, 2 January 2011

Sydney solicitor Bill McNally has raced horses with the Wyong based Tilley family for the best part of three decades.

On Monday at Muswellbrook, the long tradition continues when two-year-old Dangerous Edition makes his race debut in the MRC Function Centre 2YO Maiden over 900 metres.

Trainer Les Tilley hopes the juvenile can race well and qualify for the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) at Rosehill on January 22.

Tulloch Stakes winner Fill The Bill (1990) and stakes placed Racing Writer head a long list of prominent winners McNally, Les Tilley and father Ron have shared in.

Retired Sydney businessman Terry Lindfield also shares in the ownership of Dangerous Edition.

Les Tilley purchased Dangerous Edition (Seidnazar-Birds Of A Feather) for $16,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney.

"I picked him on type, he looked like being an early two-year-old, a nice foal by a speed sire," Tilley said.

"Plus he was within our budget."

The gelding was Tilley's only yearling purchase last year. He rarely races youngsters with his last two-year-old winner Marchessy in December, 2003.

"He's a fairly strong compact type," Tilley said of Dangerous Edition.

"But he's a horse that gets fat on the smell of an oily rag.

"After one preparation I tipped him out. He came back in looking like a broodmare in foal!

"He's a terrific doer, keeping the weight off him is a full time occupation."

Tilley admitted Dangerous Edition hadn't shown much on the track before trialling over 800 metres at Newcastle on December 21.

"He'd had a couple of jump outs, didn't show a lot but in the trial he showed more early speed than he ever has," he said.

"It surprised us, but it was a pleasant surprise him winning. We didn't really know what to expect.

"He did race greenly in the trial, ran around a bit, but he showed speed and got to the line good."

Dangerous Edition beat the Paul Perry-trained Royal Flush and Double Your Money inthe trial. Both placegetters oppose the gelding Monday.

"The trial experience will have done him the world of good," Tilley said.

"He's gone on well, drawn well (barrier two). I'm happy with him."
