Nerreman sweep Group races in Melbourne

Graduates of small Forbes NSW breeding operation Nerreman swept both the Group races at Caulfield in Melbourne on Saturday, with Sincero and Lady Of Harrods claiming the Group 2 Memsie Stakes and Group 3 H.D.F McNeil Stakes respectively.

Nerreman principals Roger & Lyn Gorham are over the moon for the connections of the successful gallopers they sold two years apart at Inglis’ Sydney Classic Yearling Sale.

“We’ve only sold two at the Classic, they’re both Group winners and for only a small farm we’re having plenty of fun,” Roger told Inglis on Saturday afternoon.

Lady Of Harrods ($80,000 2011 Classic, 3f Dubawi-Royal Conspiracy) claimed the first leg of the amazing double when defeating a strong field in the Group 3 MRC H.D.F McNeil Stakes over 1200m.

The Dubawi filly struggled last start in the heavy going in the Quezette Stakes, but found today’s dead rated track much more to her liking to score in the three-year-old feature in Melbourne from Kabayan and Shamexpress.

“She shows a lot of ability, it was too heavy last start so we headed towards this race and it’s worked out,” said trainer Russell Cameron.

“We’ve got her in the Guineas and those races, she might be too brilliant for it, but we might have a crack at it,” Cameron added.

Bred by Mrs T Hamade, Lady Of Harrods was purchased by the Gorhams from the 2010 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale for just $4,000, before being offered and sold under their Nerreman banner at the 2011 Classic Yearling Sale for $80,000 to Russell Cameron.

Dual Group 1 winner Sincero ($8,000 2009 Classic, 5g Umatilla-Yours As Always) then completed the Melbourne Group double for Nerreman sold horses when scoring a dominant two length win in the Group 2 MRC Memsie Stakes (1400m) over Happy Trails and Second Effort.

Bred by the Gorham’s and sold under Nerreman to trainer Stephen Farley for $8,000 at the 2009 Classic Sale, Sincero has earned $1,731,975 for his connections including a large group of lucky owners; G De Vries, P Walker, M Murphy, Mindshore Synd Pty Ltd, I Turbet, D Chappelow, S McLeish, K Duggan, R Poot & S N Johnson

The bargain son of Umatilla claimed two Group 1 victories in 2011, the ATC George Main Stakes (1600m) and BRC Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). Connections are aiming to follow in the footsteps of Sunline, Makybe Diva and So You Think, which all won the Memsie on their way to claiming the Group 1 MVRC W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) later in the spring.

“It’s been twelve months since he’s been in the winner’s circle but he’s going super. I love him, can’t believe it,” Stephen Farley said after today’s win.

“He’s a very underrated horse, when he’s right he’s very dynamite. He’s got a big campaign ahead, but I couldn’t have been happier with the way the horse was going.

“He’s competitive against [Cox Plate favourite] More Joyous. We’ve got the horse, we’ve just got to have him right on the day,” Farley said.

Sincero now sits second, on 10 points, in the Melbourne Racing Club’s Caulfield Spring Weight-For-Age Championship behind fellow Inglis graduates Second Effort (16 points), which won the first leg of the series, the Group 2 MRC P.B. Lawrence Stakes on August 18, before finishing third today.

Golden Archer takes earnings past $500,000

Consistent top level sprinter Golden Archer ($80,000 2010 Easter, 4h Rock Of Gibraltar-Vienetta) took his earning past $500,000 with victory in Race 5 at Caulfield, the Listed TheShark.com.au Stakes over 1100m.

Golden Archer was bred by Mr K Taylor and sold from Sefton Park Stud’s draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to trainer Peter Moody for $80,000.

The four-year-old has had 13 starts for eight wins and three placings in his career so far, a fantastic record not lost on his trainer.

“He’s raced in stakes company all his life, he’s a terrifically consistently sprinter, you’d put him in the echelon of the top half a dozen sprinters in the country over five, five and a half furlongs or a soft six,” Peter Moody commented after his latest win.

“It takes a bloody good horse to beat him, his record shows that. It took Sepoy at his best here to beat him as a two-year-old or this day last year.

“He’s very much underestimated; he’s a hell of a good horse,” Moody added.

Inglis graduates certainly got off to a flying start during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, winning seven of the eight races on Saturday’s card at Caulfield:
