Northern Meteor Filly Upstages Guelph

Breednet - Tara Madgwick - Saturday, 7 September 2013

A dual Group I winner last season at two, Guelph was expected to kick off with a win in the Group II ATC Furious Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, but at the post it was unheralded Bound for Earth who had her head in front.

Both fillies were resuming from a spell and made their runs together with the John O’Shea trained daughter of Northern Meteor sliding up on the inside to snare a narrow win in the 1200 metre sprint.

It was the first Black Type win for Bound for Earth, who won easily on debut at Canterbury back in April before heading to Brisbane where she was not beaten far in the Group II BRC Champagne Classic and Sires Produce Stakes.

"We’ve always had a nice opinion of her and she had no luck at all up in Brisbane, so we were hoping she’d run well,” said O’Shea.

"When she gets to a mile she’ll be at her best, so she and Guelph will have a good rivalry over the next few months.”

A $290,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Segenhoe Thoroughbreds from the draft of Broadwater Thoroughbreds, Bound for Earth has won $165,000 in prizemoney with the promise of much more to come.

Bred by Reg Kemister, she is a half-sister to stakes-placed Romanus and Melpomene and is the best of five winners for Group I VRC Oaks winner Bulla Borghese.

Bulla Borghese has a yearling filly by Manhattan Rain and was one of 160 mares covered by ill-fated Northern Meteor last spring.

Bound for Earth is the fifth stakes-winner Northern Meteor joining Romantic Touch, Zoustar, The Voice and Eurozone.
