The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained Petrology headed a stakes treble for Inglis Easter graduates at Sandown on Saturday when winning the Group 2 MRC Sandown Guineas (1600m) in strong style.
Petrology (Fastnet Rock x Romantic River) was one of three stakes winners at Sandown today that were sourced from the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. The others bookending the day were Thurlow (Sebring x Princess Emmy) and Politeness (Street Sense x Berengaria).
Hayes has big Group 1 aims for Petrology in the Autumn following today’s Guineas win saying “That was the win of a very good horse, a weight for age horse going forward.
“Ollie [Damien Oliver] rode him as a two-year-old and he said he felt like a Group 1 horse. He recommended a few of his friends go in the horse.
“Old Ollie is not a bad judge. I’m really excited about this horse, we will put him aside now and he might be an Australian Guineas horse in the autumn,” added Hayes.
Bred by Caradale Pty Ltd, Petrology was purchased by Lindsay Park Bloodstock for $200,000 from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
The valuable Fastnet Rock colt is owned by P V Walsh, D A Hayes, D S Thomas, J A Frankhuisen & D Maher.
Zipping Classic Day, named after $4.5 million Inglis Easter earner Zipping, got off to a great start with Qatar Bloodstock’s filly Thurlow saluting in the Listed MRC Santa's Magical Kingdom Stakes (1000m).
Thurlow (Sebring x Princess Emmy) is now being aimed towards the Group 1 MRC Blue Diamond Stakes by trainer Robert Smerdon following today’s triumph.
“She has always showed talent but hasn’t really put it together. I can see her being better off a break next preparation and over a smidgen further,” Smerdon said.
Bred by Widden Stud Australia, the filly was sold from their draft at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $150,000 to David Redvers for Qatar Bloodstock.
A daughter of Widden’s outstanding resident sire Sebring, Thurlow is the first foal of stakes winning mare Princess Emmy and already a stakes winner the juvenile looks to have a very bright future racing in Qatar Bloodstock’s claret and gold colours.
Closing out the successful day at Sandown for Inglis Easter graduates was the Robert Smerdon trained Politeness in the Group 3 MRC Summond Stakes (1500m).
Politeness (Street Sense x Berengaria) was beaten less than two lengths in the Group 1 Myer Stakes going into today’s event and with clear galloping room today was able to show her tremendous talent.
“It was great to see her have clear galloping room and hit the line like that for Phil Sly who is a great supporter of the stable. She’s had the tag of the best horse in our place for a long, long time,” said Smerdon’s stable foreman Stuart Webb.
Raced by Phil Sly and Katsumi Yoshida, Politeness was purchased by Malua Bloodstock / Bahen Bloodstock for $115,000 from the draft of Sledmere Stud at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
The Anne Raymond bred filly has netted $330,000 thanks to four wins and three placings from 17 starts in her career to date.
Inglis Easter, the sales source of Petrology, Thurlow and Politeness, is set to be held on 7, 8 and 9 April 2015 during The Championships weekends in Sydney.
