Pompeii Triumph Signals 2009 Autumn Opener

Inglis Autumn Yearling Sale headliner Pompeii Ruler made a triumphant return to the winners’ list in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes today, completing a Group 1 double for Inglis graduates at Randwick.

His victory followed Patinack Farm’s triumph with Red Ransom colt Onemorenomore in the G1 Champagne Stakes.

POMPEII RULER (P$9000 2004 Autumn, 6g Genuine-West With Night) has been a wonderful flagbearer for the Inglis Autumn Yearling Sale, which begins at Oaklands tomorrow.

The Mick Price trained galloper announced himself as one of Australia’s premier weight-for-age performers in the spring of 2006 and he franked that form the following autumn when a dominant winner of the Group 1 Australian Cup.

Injuries have meant the gelding has started just eight times since that day, but even with all of his setbacks, he is still the winner of eight races, with today’s victory taking his earnings beyond the $2million mark.

He typifies the kind of value shrewd buyers can find at the Inglis Autumn Yearling Sale.

Featuring a catalogue of 373 yearlings, the 2009 renewal begins from 12pm tomorrow and continues through Monday.

The sale will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live, with up to the minute statistics. Online bidding is available for those not able to make it to Melbourne and all passed in horses will be offered via the Make an Offer service.

ONEMORENOMORE ($800,000 2008 Easter, 2c Red Ransom-Palia), who was prepared for sale by Cressfield Stud, becomes the first Group 1 winner from Patinack Farm’s 2008 Yearling Sale purchases.

The win is especially pleasing for Nathan Tinkler and the Patinack team, because Onemorenomore's Group 3 winning dam Palia is a sister to Lady Capel – the dam of the stud’s flagship G1 winning stallion Casino Prince.

The most expensive yearling by Red Ransom sold in 2008, Onemorenomore is now a dual stakes winner and he claimed his Group 1 victory in dominant fashion, leaving the more fancied Tickets and Manhattan Rain comfortably in his wake at the end of the 1600m trip.

Completing a stakes double for Easter graduates, promising stayer BERLIOZ ($200,000 2007 Easter, 3c Zabeel-Jervaux) made amends for a narrow defeat in the G1 Western Australian Derby when taking out today’s Listed VRC St Leger.

Prepared for sale by Swettenham Stud, the David Hayes trained colt has now taken his earnings beyond $240,000, with some big staying targets on the horizon.
