Premier concludes as numbers continue to rise

A Hanseatic colt of Rosemont topped the final day of action at Oaklands as the 2024 Premier Yearling Sale concluded.

At the end of play this afternoon, the Book 1 clearance rate had climbed to 79% with the average sitting at $129,748 and median at $90,000.

Today’s Showcase Session saw 145 yearlings sell, headed by the Hanseatic x Knowles colt, which sold to Peter Moody for $160,000.

He was one of 17 yearlings to realise $100,000 or more, a dramatic increase on the seven that reached that mark during the same session 12 months ago.

The day also capped off a strong home sale for first season Rosemont sire Hanseatic.

“It has been that busy here at Inglis this week, it’s been unbelievable,’’ Rosemont’s Anthony Mithen said.

“The weather’s turned it on, the BBQ’s been sizzling, the horses have been hot, hot, hot, Hanseatics have been selling off the charts, everyone’s happy.

“This particular colt (ex Knowles) was a beauty, he found his place perfectly at the top of the Showcase Session and it’s great that he’s heading to our great friend in Peter Moody.’’

The colt (pictured) was the sole purchase for Moody in today’s Showcase Session, adding to the six he bought outright in Book 1 for an overall spend of almost $2m.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was pleased with how the sale finished up, noting the marked increase in clearance rate for Days 1 and 2 of the sale and the ever-increasing clearance rate for the Showcase Session.

“The clearance for the main book is going to hit 80% and possibly higher, which is a testament to the work of the vendors in meeting the market and also to the buyers who have continued to search for opportunities,’’ Hutch said.

“The top of the market has statistically been notably strong, I mean when you look at year-on-year figures for lots to sell for $250,000 or more, $300,000 or more, $400,000 or more and $500,000 or more, they’re either the exact same or ahead of the corresponding figures of 12 months ago.

“There is no disguising that there is a selectivity to the approach of buyers and at certain levels supply has exceeded demand, but the sale has really held up very well overall.

“We will continue to work really hard with vendors and buyers the next 24-48 hours especially to get as many more sales through as possible before moving our attention to Easter, which is without doubt going to capture a huge audience and be a fantastic spectacle once again.’’

Focus now switches to Sydney for the Easter Yearling Sale, for which 500 horses have been catalogued.

Inspections will begin at Riverside on Tuesday April 2.
