Premier Growth

15th Feb 2006

All-eyes turn to Melbourne next month for the Premier Yearling Sale, the three-day Victorian breeding showcase held at Oaklands from March 5 - 7.

Undoubtedly the most progressive yearling sale in Australia, the Premier continues to advance in extraordinary fashion and given the strong market at the Classic Sale earlier this week Inglis Director Peter Heagney is understandably positive the Melbourne sale can continue in the same vein.

“The quality of the Premier catalogue this year is the best we’ve ever had to offer and I am confident that the individuals will match up to the better pedigrees,” he said.

Heagney highlights a number of factors responsible for the Premier Sale’s rise to prominence in recent years.

“Unquestionably in the last two years we have attracted a very strong buying bench - last year in particular. Interest on the first day of the 2005 sale was stronger than at any day of Australian sales that season.

“Secondly the success of Premier graduates. Alinghi and the others may now be retired but the two-year-olds from last year’s sale are showing a lot of promise - I Got Chills and Follow The Till are particularly exciting.”

Both fillies are by the former Victorian based sire General Nediym, with the first mentioned nominated by David Hayes as the fastest two-year-old he has trained for years.

Heagney also notes the role of Victorian vendors in the sales increasing success.

“As well as gaining the support of major studs in New South Wales and New Zealand we have been able to retain most of the best bred yearlings in our own state. I think breeders are now realising the Premier Sale is a very strong selling platform to market their yearlings,” he said.
