PREMIER MARKET LEADERS

The 2006 Premier Yearling Sale broke new ground at Oaklands this week, smashing all previous records to become the highest grossing bloodstock sale ever held in Victoria.

The $24,496,250 turnover for 382 yearlings was up nine percent on last year’s previous record figure , while the average of $64,126 and median figure of $50,000 both new records, represented jumps of eight per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

The median is an indicator of market strength and the dramatic increase in this figure is particularly pleasing. Proof of the quality of yearlings on offer was the fact 61 lots brought $100,000 or more - a significant jump on the 52 breaking that barrier last year.

Undoubtedly the most progressive yearling sale in Australia, the Premier’s continued advance is a credit to vendors, while the ever expanding domestic and international buying bench at the sale is giving the market a competitive edge.

The sale topper was lot 324, a King’s Best half-sister to VRC Guineas winner Serenade Rose selling for $570,000 to the bid of Graeme Rogerson.

TOP TEN SIRES BY AVERAGE (3 or more sold)

Encosta De Lago continued his domination of the Premier sale with 21 yearlings from his final Victorian crop grossing $3,303,500 at an average of $157,310 - over four times his $38,500 service fee at Blue Gum Farm in 2003.

Progeny of the Fairy King sire filled six of the top-ten slots and earned him the leading sire crown at the Premier.

The Widden shuttle stallion Anabaa finished up as second leading sire by average with four of his youngsters changing hands for an average price of $122,500.

The popularity of first crop sire Choisir continues to abound with eleven of his representatives selling for an average $92,500 to put him on top of the freshman sire table.

PREMIER II ROUND-UP

Following on from Session I was the Premier II Sale, which smashed all previous records, grossing a phenomenal $2,823,500 for 114 yearlings sold – up a massive 144 per cent on last year's turnover and a factor largely attributable to t he addition of a new 120 box stable block at Oaklands allowing vendors to show their yearlings much earlier than at previous sales.

A large proportion of leading buyers stayed on for the second session of the Premier including clients from New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.
