Price makes right decision

RacingNetwork - Adrian Dunn - Saturday, 13 July 2013

After deliberating for days, Mick Price’s decision to run Vicario at Caulfield paid dividends when the filly won the Yarra Valley Farms Plate.

Price had Vicario entered tomorrow at Sportingbet Park, but the filly was fourth emergency and the leading Caulfield trainer decided not to roll the dice on her gaining a start.

Vicario justified that decision as she finished strongly to overhaul favourite Octavia on the post to score by the narrowest margin.

Price described Vicario as a “little bit of a forgotten” horse and her win in Saturday grade was a fitting reward for her owners.

“Her run at Moonee Valley was excellent behind two Listed fillies and we decided to keep her fresh for the 1200 metres,” Price said.

“She needs the races run where there is a little bit of speed so she can finish off.”

Vicario, a $21 chance, scored by a short half head from Octavia, which was backed from $3.20 to $3 favourite with one length to Valid Contract, $18, third.

Love For Ransom, an $8 chance, again disappointed in finishing seventh after missing the start. Jockey Dwayne Dunn queried whether the filly had come up this preparation.

Vicario (3f Hard Spun x Sheedy's Sheila) was a $58,000 purchase by part-owner T Ireland from the draft of Eliza Park at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
