Profiteer stuns opposition with Millennium monstering

Outstanding juvenile Profiteer (Capitalist) announced himself arguably the best 2YO colt in the land with a dominant victory in today’s feature $2m Inglis Millennium at Randwick.

A $165,000 Classic Yearling Sale graduate, Profiteer bounded to the lead for jockey Hugh Bowman and never looked like surrendering, easing down for a stunning five-and-a-quarter-length victory.

The Millennium trifecta – Baranof (Hinchinbrook) finished second ahead of Pegasi (Star Turn) – were all sold at last year’s Classic Sale, a fantastic advertisement for this year’s auction on the eve of the event.

Purchased by Roll The Dice Racing and Rogers Bloodstock from the Newgate Farm draft, Profiteer remains undefeated from two career starts.

Such was the dominance of today’s victory, the TAB slashed his odds for the G1 Golden Slipper from $13 into $5 second favourite behind homebred Enthaar ($4.50).

Today’s win effectively guaranteed Profiteer a start in the Slipper, with $69,500 of the prizemoney qualifying towards the ballot, the only restricted 2YO race to do so.

Enthaar’s I Am Invincible half brother (ex Final Agreement) is being offered at this year’s Easter Yearling Sale as lot 305, by Emirates Park.

Profiteer was bred by SF Bloodstock, Blake Sandblom and Winstar Farm.

In a significant result for supplier Newgate Farm, they purchased the colt back during the week for a reported multi-million dollar sum.

Should he continue on his winning way in months to come, he will stand as a stallion at Newgate alongside his sire Capitalist upon retirement.

“I’ve watched a lot of races over a lot of years but I’ve never been more nervous on a racetrack than I was today,’’ Newgate’s Henry Field said.

“There was a lot on the line, we’d have looked like fools if he flopped but Hugh Bowman told me he was a very good horse, Mick Price told me he was a very good horse and Daniel O’Sullivan told me he was a very good horse so it’s very relieving to see him do what he did.

“This colt is very, very good and it’s great for the farm that we offered him at Classic and we’ve got another great Classic draft this year starting tomorrow so we can’t wait to get to the sale and see what happens.’’

Newgate will offer a draft of 30 at the Classic Sale, which begins at Riverside tomorrow at 10am.

Winning trainer Mick Price knew how good Profiteer was pre-race but was still relieved to see him win as well as he did.

“I’ve watched a lot of good 2YOs…and he’s brilliant,’’ Price said.

“We’ve just got to win a Slipper now. You saw the horse, you saw how brilliant he was, he’s clearly the best horse here so hopefully now he can do that again in a Slipper.’’
