Promising Youngsters win at Randwick

Landing and Single Style are tipped for bigger things after notching Randwick Listed wins today.

LANDING ($230,000 2010 Easter, 3g More Than Ready-Joy Of Flight) is headed towards the $500,000 Inglis Guineas on May 19 after graduating to stakes grade with his dominant display in the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m).

Landing is now unbeaten in four starts and the Hawkesbury Guineas is the likely next stop before Scone.

“What a talent. This is a really exciting horse,” trainer Gai Waterhouse said.

Jockey Nash Rawiller said he had control of the race a long way from home.

“It was game over after he switched off in front. He was doing it on his ear,” Rawiller said.

Gary Portelli predicted a bright future for SINGLE STYLE ($150,000 2011 Premier, 2f Not A Single Doubt-Furla) following her last stride win in the Listed Keith Mackay (1200m).

Purchased out of the Esker Lodge draft in Melbourne, Single Style is a half-sister to the speedy sprinter Fab Fevola.

“I staked my reputation on this filly. I just fell in love with her at the sales and virtually guaranteed to the owners she would be a stakes horse,” Portelli said.

“So it’s a bit of a relief I guess to get this out of the way.

“On Tuesday I declared her but then I became very worried about the track, so I was pleased to see it drying out.”

Portelli rates Single Style favourably with his former classy filly Before Too Long, winner of this race 10 years ago and then the Group 2 Champagne Stakes later that year.

Portelli feels Single Style has the scope to stretch to 1400m and possibly a mile next season.

In Brisbane, BETTER THAN READY ($140,000 2011 Easter, 2c More Than Ready-Sally’s World) landed a big plunge when overcoming troubles to win the QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m).

Better Than Ready was slowly away and then was climbing over heels in the early stages, causing some concern for those that backed him from $21 to $2.80. But backers were soon on good terms with themselves as the Kelly Schweida trained youngster found clear galloping room in the straight and bounded away to win easily.
