Racing To Win earns late Doomben Cup call-up

Racenet - Clinton Payne - Wednesday, 6 May 2009

Sydney star Racing To Win will be given a second chance to show his worth over a middle distance after trainer John O’Shea lodged a late Doomben Cup entry this week.

Racing To Win has raced just once beyond 1600 metres in his 23-start career when unplaced in the 2006 W S Cox Plate.

O’Shea believes the time is right to experiment again in a bid to reignite the rising seven-year-old’s career.

“We think that being that bit older that if he was ever to run past a mile up to a mile-and-a-quarter [2000m] now would be the time,” O’Shea said on his website.

“At this current point in time the Doomben Cup looks to be the most suitable race for him.

“After consultation with his owners Trevor Stuckey and Penny Yan and input from Hugh [Bowman] we believe this is the best option at this stage of his career.”

Bowman will ride Racing To Win in the Doomben Cup and he is confident the multiple Group I winner is ready for a step up in distance.

“The horse is really going good, his work yesterday [Tuesday] morning was right out of the top draw and he’s a lot fitter.” Bowman said.

“They’ve just run along too quick for him over the shorter race distances this time in and he hasn’t had a chance to settle.

“If ever in his career he’s going to get over that bit further ground it’s now.

“The best part of his last couple of starts has been the last 100 metres which has been very, very good.”

The $500,000 weight-for-age Doomben Cup will be run on Saturday week.
