Record Ready2Race Sale sets new benchmarks across the board

A record Inglis Ready2Race Sale has concluded at Riverside with the sale’s average, gross and clearance all setting new benchmarks.

On a strong day of trade that exceeded expectation:

*The sale average of $113,947 was a 17% year-on-year increase and remarkably a 49% jump in just two years

*Despite a smaller catalogue, the gross of $11,736,500 eclipsed last year while the clearance (82%) and median ($80,000) were also both significant year-on-year increases

*The top lot – a Super One x Cash First colt for Symphony Lodge – realised $400,000 and was the fastest horse at the breeze ups at 10.03secs

*A total of 46 horses sold for $100,000 or more – up from 39 last year and 26 in 2019 - while 17 realised $200,000 or more, a 42% year-on-year increase and 89% jump from 2019

*There were some outstanding pinhook results, headed by lot 90, a Flying Artie x Stryking Debut colt for Blake Ryan which sold for $220,000 today having been a $20,000 May Yearling Sale purchase and a Vancouver x Purity colt for Glenn Haven Thoroughbreds which sold today for $320,000 having been purchased at the Premier Yearling Sale for $120,000.

The day’s top lot honours went to Symphony Lodge, who sold their Super One x Cash First colt (pictured) to Hong Kong connections for $400,000.

“It was fantastic, such an amazing result. We were obviously unable to be there so we watched the Sale Day Live broadcast all day with Caroline Searcy and Katelyn Mallyon and it was fabulous, it’s really interesting and a great way to watch the sale,’’ Symphony’s Alison Park said.

“The result with the Super One colt was amazing but at the end of the day he breezed up quick, he’s a quick horse, he’s big and scopey, he wasn’t pushed, he did it all so naturally so he deserved to sell well.

“It absolutely exceeded expectations though. Super One is great for the overseas market but he probably hasn’t had the runners here yet to get that same recognition so we never really knew how the horse would sell so to top the sale, wow, it really is amazing. I thought we’d get $200,000-$250,000 especially after the X-Ray hits which were big, plus he was busy during parades but $400,000? No way did I see that coming.

“We sent three nice horses who all sold well, they’ve all gone to great homes, the Super One result especially is just phenomenal. It’s great for us, great for our brand, it makes us want to have more horses at next year’s Inglis 2YO Sale.’’

Warwick Farm trainer Amanda Turner bought the second and third-top lots – a Capitalist x Orchestrator gelding from Blake Ryan Racing and a Pierro x Ajeeta colt from Cheltenham Stables – both for $370,000.

It led her to being the second-top buyer for the day behind only Trilogy Racing, a relatively new entity headed by Jason and Melanie Stenning who spent just shy of $1m.

Turner said the two horses she purchased “made for a dream day’’.

“They were the two I wanted and realistically you never get to take home 100% of what you want but I was lucky today that I did,’’ Turner said.

“The Pierro, I actually went to look at another one from the draft and then they said I should have a look at the Pierro and as soon as I did I said ‘you shouldn’t have shown me him, I had him marked and now I think I’m going to have to buy him’. There’s plenty of upside with him, you can really see it.

“The Capitalist was a very athletic horse, I spoke to Blake [Ryan] as well and while he’ll be no doubt sad to lose the horse, he’s got a hell of a good price for it and I think he’s worth every cent of it.

“I was getting a bit edgy to be honest. I was hoping $250,000-$270,000 would get him but I told myself to just keep on going because he was the one I really wanted. I’m glad I did, it’s a good feeling.’’

Ryan added, on the colt that was an $85,000 Easter Yearling Sale purchase: “We had a reserve of $200,000 on him and he more than exceeded that obviously, it’s a fantastic result.

“I couldn’t be happier, he paraded well all week, he was popular, vetting numbers were through the roof.

“He’s now the most expensive horse I’ve ever sold here, it’s really testament to the promotional work Inglis has done in the lead-up behind the scenes to get the sale these legs. Everyone knew it was on and there were plenty of people here to buy or online to buy.’’

Inglis’ Managing Director Mark Webster was thrilled with the success of the day.

“To clear in excess of 80%, to see the average jump around 20% and to beat last year’s gross despite a smaller catalogue, it’s really been a fantastic sale you would have to say,’’ Webster said.

“There have been some great individual results but one of the most significant things for me was to see such a broad participation of buyers despite the tough border situation. We had buyers from Hong Kong, Macau, Philippines, Singapore, Queensland, Northern Territory, Victoria etc, mainly from people bidding online or over the phone with an agent or a member of our bloodstock team and that has really helped the sale overall.

“This sale has really led the way with graduates the past couple of years with what they have achieved on the track and let’s hope Forgot You and Gunstock – both out of last year’s Ready2Race sale – can run well in the Derby at Flemington on Saturday.’’
