Records Smashed at Premier Opening Session

12th Feb 2005

The 2005 Premier Yearling Sale opening session burst into action at the picturesque Oaklands complex today with a massive crowd on hand to witness the sales excitement and electric atmosphere.

The average price of the opening session jumped a massive 33% from the same session last year to $65,620.32. The gross rose 29% to $12,271,000 up from $9,481,500 in the same session last year.  The clearance rate held very strong at 84%.

A new record price for a yearling sold at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale was today set when lot 82, a striking bay colt by boom sire Encosta de Lago from Classic Plume (NZ), offered by Collingrove Stud as agent,  was sold for $480,000. Adelaide trainer Mark Minervini was at the sale representing Wayne Ormond from Global Thoroughbred Syndicates to purchase the colt and was anxiously bidding for him over the phone.

“We originally had a plan to go to Easter and purchase a colt with a stallions pedigree, however after I arrived yesterday I fell in love with the colt and thought we had to have him,” said Mark.

After the sale we caught up with Collingrove Marketing Manager Jenny McAlpine who was thrilled with the result.

“The colt was a great sort and made well above all expectations. The breeder Rick Jamieson of Gilgai Farm was over the moon and is to be congratulated on this outstanding result. Rick has been a great supporter of the Victorian breeding industry and everyone at Collingrove is delighted to see him receive a great return for his efforts,” said Jenny.

Peter Heagney Associate Director of William Inglis & Son Ltd was naturally very pleased with the result.

“Coming into the sale I felt confident that we had the horses with pedigrees and conformation to achieve a good result and I am delighted that this has been reflected in the figures,” commented Heagney.
