Records Tumble At Premier Sale

5th Mar 2006

The 2006 Inglis Premier Sale Session I wrapped-up in spectacular fashion at Oaklands today, with the expected strong trade materialising to bring record-breaking figures, including a new sale best price of $570,000 for a half-sister to the VRC Oaks winner SERENADE ROSE (2004 Easter $400,000).

Overall 382 lots sold for gross receipts of $24,496,250, an average of $64,126 and median figure of $50,000. This compares to 380 lots for a total of $22,385,000, average of $58,908 and median of $42,250 in 2005 and represents massive increases of 9 %, 8% and 18% respectively.

Inglis Director Peter Heagney was understandably delighted with results and said:

“When any sale has a record-breaking average, record breaking gross and new top-price, as we did today it speaks for itself.

“The demand today was exceptionally strong with a clearance rate of over 85 per cent giving an overall clearance of 82 per cent.

”With last year’s sale setting records in all areas it was always going to be a hard act to follow, so the outstanding success of this year’s sale is a credit to the wonderful job done by all the vendors.

“The interest leading into this week gave us optimism that the sale would be successful, so obviously it is very pleasing to have our confidence justified.”

The sale-topper was a King’s Best filly from Brooklyn Lodge bought by Randwick trainer Graeme Rogerson, the former buyer, trainer and part owner of the yearling’s dam Rose Of Tralee (1997 Easter $500,000).

At the end of her racing career Rogerson sold the Sadler’s Wells mare to the filly’s breeders Brooklyn Lodge, who recently sold her on to Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud, New Zealand, in foal to Redoute’s Choice.

Rogerson was under-bidder to Adrian Nicoll on Serenade Rose at the Easter sale in 2004 before picking up another half-sister, Fusaichi Rose at Easter last year for $185,000.

Not surprisingly he was very pleased with his new acquisition, which he said he’d had his eye on for the last few months.

“I think she’s great value for money- especially if Serenade Rose wins the Australian Guineas on Saturday,” said Rogerson. ”We’re back in the family now and I think she’s going to be a good filly.”

Trade began with a bang when local trainer Robbie Griffiths bought the first lot through the ring for $430,000 – the eventual second top-price of the sale.

The attractive daughter of Encosta De Lago was bought on spec by Griffiths who said afterwards: “I couldn’t fault her, she’ll have great residual value, she’s the most expensive yearling I’ve ever bought, but as a real top quality filly she should be easy to sell.”
