Russian to Group 1 glory

Russian Revolution made it four wins from as many starts and has Group 1 glory in his sights following another catch-me-if-you-can victory in today’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Not concerned about a fierce headwind at Randwick, jockey Kerrin McEvoy displayed bold tactics in front and had enough in the tank to hold off his challengers.

Russian Revolution will now head to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the Flemington straight on Derby Day later this month in what is shaping as one of the races of the Spring.

Already heading to the race are Russian Revolution’s two major scalps today, Astern and Capitalist, as well as fellow Inglis graduate Extreme Choice, who proved himself one of the world’s leading 3YOs when he won the WFA Group 1 Moir Stakes at The Valley on Friday night.

In winning today, Russian Revolution joined a phenomenal list of 3YO colts who have come through an Inglis sale ring and gone on to win the Roman Consul, including Exceed And Excel, Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge and Brazen Beau.

Russian Revolution (Snitzel x Ballet D’amour) was offered by Vinery Stud at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, where he was purchased by China Horse Club and Michael Wallace Bloodstock for $320,000.

Winning trainer Peter Snowden believed Russian Revolution’s win proved he was one of the best 3YOs in the country in what is shaping as a vintage crop.

“He’s an underrated horse probably but the only reason people probably haven’t given him the credit he deserves yet is because he wasn’t exposed to the wider public until June, but he’s pretty good,’’ Snowden said.

“He’ll get his chance in the Coolmore now. He deserves that.

“He did it the hard way today, taking on the breeze out in front, doing the work yet still came home in 32.9, so that alone tells you he’s a classy animal.’’

Snitzel continues to be a leading stallion and there are two Snitzel juveniles being offered at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale on Tuesday.

Platinum Park will present a colt out of Crevice and a filly out of Dubai Melody at the sale, which has the strongest ever catalogue for a sale of its type.

Inspections are on Sunday and Monday and the sale begins at Inglis’ Sydney Newmarket complex at 11am Tuesday.
