Scone Stepping Stone For Sincero

Racing And Sports - Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Smart galloper Sincero will use Saturday's Inglis Guineas at Scone as a stepping stone to a winter carnival campaign in Brisbane.

The Stephen Farley-trained three-year-old was a class above his rivals in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) fresh-up, running away with a five length margin in the heavy conditions.

According to Farley it's not ideal jumping straight to a mile this weekend, though, so he gave him a solid hit-out at the Randwick trials last Friday.

There he led the field and won by three-quarters of a length over All Silent, with jockey Chris O'Brien even pushing him a furlong past the post to ensure a testing gallop.

“He's a funny horse and he only does what he has to,” Farley said.

“I wasn't disappointed with the trial. He did what he needed and has pulled up well.”

“The step up a mile is not ideal but it's just the way it's panned out and that's the reason I've used the trial for a run in between. Hopefully that's topped him up.”

The Inglis Guineas is a $250,000 race restricted to Inglis graduates where Sincero, with seven wins from just 10 starts, rating well clear of the other entries.

His effort on Saturday will determine if he then heads to Queensland where Farley hopes to make the Stradbroke Handicap line-up.

“He'll go to Brisbane for the QTC Cup, and if he wins that then he'll get into the Stradbroke. If not he can run in the Queensland Guineas on the same day.”

Farley said he would rather have to back up from the QTC Cup than take on Black Caviar and co in the Doomben 10,000 the week before.

If he makes the Stradbroke, regular rider Chris O'Brien won't be able to ride light enough for the featherweight when Glen Boss is likely to return from Singapore for the ride.

Sincero, a son of Umatilla, is the $4.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet for the Stradbroke on June 11, ahead of Black Caviar who is $6.00 but unlikely to run
