Scone Race Club’s Cup meeting last May has won the Racing NSW award for Most Popular Country race meeting for the 2009-2010 racing season.
The award, considered the most prestigious in country racing, was presented to the club at a black tie function at Randwick last Friday night.
Judges said the award recognised the record TAB turnover on the meeting, the crowd, the community involvement and the growth of the cup carnival.
This year’s cup day featured the first running of the rich Inglis Guineas (1600m) for three year olds which was won by the brilliant Star Of Octagonal, ridden by Glen Boss.
That race will now become one of the blue ribbon events at each Scone carnival.
Next year’s carnival will be run, for the first time, over two days and will feature a stand alone Saturday meeting – a first for a country club,
The two meetings, on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14 will feature $2 million in prize money and bonuses.
The club’s secretary, Helen Sinclair, said praise for the success of the carnival and the award belonged to a lot of people and organisations.
“The award belongs to our sponsors who invest so heavily in our industry and I particularly thank Emirates Park and Inglis,” Mrs Sinclair said.
The draft program for next year’s carnival and accommodation packages are available on the club’s web site www.sconeraceclub.com.au
Scone Race Club is gearing up for a big crowd at its next meeting on Monday, December 27 with that day declared a public holiday as part of the Christmas celebrations.
