Second Effort capped of a tremendous Australian racing season for Inglis graduates when claiming the last Group event for 2012/13 on Saturday, the MRC Bletchingly Stakes over 1200m.
The Clinton McDonald trained galloper settled midfield improving on the fence and once he hit the front at the 200m mark was always going to be tough to go past. The win took Second Effort’s career prizemoney earnings to $657,093.
Second Effort (P$45,000 2008 Premier, 6g Mossman-Relativity) was the winner of the first Group 2 race for the 2012/13 Australian racing season, the MRC P.B. Lawrence Stakes, also at Caulfield like today’s win.
Trainer Clinton McDonald said he would aim higher next season with the tough sprinter, with the upgraded Group 1 MRC Memsie Stakes in September in the planner for the son of Mossman.
“We were pretty confident coming into today. He’s probably looking for the seven furlongs so we are going into his next two pretty confident,” said McDonald.
Second Effort has now earned over 13 times the $50,000 reserve he passed in for at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale when offered by Lindsay Park Stud on behalf of breeder Dr G S Tucker.
Inglis graduates claimed the first and last Group races of the current Australian racing season, with Shanghai Warrior winning the Group 3 VRC Aurie’s Star Handicap last August. Highlight’s in between include the four Group 1 victories of All Too Hard, his unbeaten half-sister Black Caviar thrilling crowds wherever she went and the Victoria Derby / The BMW double for exciting three-year-old stayer Fiveandahalfstar.
