Session One average up almost 10% at Melbourne Premier

Session One of the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale came to a close at Oaklands on Tuesday, with the average price jumping up almost 10% from last year.

“Although we catalogued 26 less yearlings in this year’s Session One the gross is up thanks to a healthy increase in the average price to $79,000,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“It has still been a very selective market, which is shown in the results with the better types and progeny of the top sires selling well.

“Last year’s sale we sold 25 Passed-In lots from Session One privately after the end of day three, so similarly we expect this year’s clearance rate to push through 80% in the coming days,” said Webster.

408 yearlings have been sold for $32,079,912 over the past three days, leading to an average of $78,627, median of $60,000 and clearance rate of 76%.

Two lots sold for $300,000 today. New Zealand agent Tony Pike purchased Fairhill Farm’s colt by Not A Single Doubt from Euchre (Lot 365) (pictured) and Nordic Racing & Breeding bought Lauriston Thoroughbreds’ star colt by Redoute’s Choice from Glimmers (Lot 405).

Buyers from South Africa (32 lots), Hong Kong (15), Singapore (12) and Japan (3) have all purchased more than they did at Melbourne Premier last year. The total spend from Victorian and Western Australian buyers is also up from 2012.

David Hayes has finished Session One as the leading buyer by aggregate having signed for 8 yearlings for $1,285,000. Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu picked up another two yearlings today to add to the five purchased on Sunday and Monday, all at an average price of $125,000.

Triple Crown Syndications and Spicer Thoroughbreds have been very busy since the sale’s 2pm start on Sunday buying 10 lots for $720,000 and 4 lots of $780,000 respectively.

Leading Victorian trainers Peter Moody and Mick Price both spent more than $750,000 on the 7 yearlings they each bought.

Eliza Park has jumped to the top of the vendors list by aggregate having sold 35 yearlings for $2,444,000.

Lauriston Thoroughbreds leads the vendor by average (3 or more sold) after selling 6 lots at an average price of $194,167 over the last three days.

“Huge thanks to Caroline Searcy, Jason Richardson, Rob Guild and the whole team that put together a brilliant Inglis TV Live service,” added Webster.

“We didn’t get much notice to pull it all together, but we did it for the viewers at home and we have received tremendous feedback with over 3,000 individual viewers tuning in each day,” Webster said.

Horses passed in during Session One are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.

Session Two of the 2013 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale featuring 187 catalogued lots, commences at the normal time of 11am tomorrow.
