Sheza Alibi stars again with third G1 victory

Sheza Alibi enhanced her burgeoning reputation as a turf superstar - and perhaps the bargain buy of the century - with an imperious victory in today’s G1 Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m at Flemington.

Bought as a weanling for just $10,000 through the Inglis Digital June Sale in 2023, the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare claimed her third G1 victory at start No.12, following autumn successes in the G1 Randwick Guineas and G1 Doncaster Mile.

Ridden to perfection by Luke Nolen, Sheza Alibi found an ideal spot from gate five of 15, one off the fence in midfield, as Treasurethe Moment and Another Wil set a solid pace.

As the field fanned on the turn, Sheza Alibi cruised towards the leaders menacingly out wide and looked the winner a long way from home. She strode to the front at the 250m and came away to score by 2.75 lengths, as $1.60 favourite.

Bought at that Inglis Digital sale by her sole owner, Queensland grazier Fred Noffke, with Middlebrook Valley Lodge the consignor, the Fred and Desley Moncur-bred 4YO has now earned more than $4.3m.

Coleman described the 4YOs unfolding story as “incredibly special”.

“She loves defying history, this girl, and I think she’s going to continue to do it as her career progresses,” Coleman said.

“She looked like she did that quite easily today, which is incredible, when you look at the horses that she was up against. She is very, very special and it means so much to our stable. A massive thank you to everyone who has been a part of it.”

Coleman said Sheza Alibi had matured as a 4YO and will now look to emulate Autumn Glow by winning the $10m G1 Golden Eagle at Randwick on October 31.

“She’s probably come back more of a finished product this time around,” Coleman said. “She’s always been a lovely horse to look at. She has developed, is bigger and stronger and hopefully we continue to see that.

“I would say we’re still geared towards the Golden Eagle, but never make decisions on race day.”

She added: “She began better today. She put herself there, travelled sweetly. It was a beautiful ride by Luke and he had her in that position where she was going to be able to get mobile when he needed to.”

Sheza Alibi is one of 125 individual G1-winning Inglis graduates since 2018.

It was a strong day at Flemington for Inglis graduates, with straight track specialist Losesomewinmore taking out the G2 Bobbie Lewis Handicap over 1200m.

The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained gelding finished strongly up the inside to claim his first Group victory by 0.5 lengths from 13 rivals.

Bred by Echo Beach Bloodstock, Losesomewinmore was an $80,000 purchase at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale of 2021 for Simple Bloodstock Services, from the draft of Vinery Stud.

The lightly-raced 7YO has now won six times up the Flemington straight - two at black type level - from 11 attempts, amid eight career wins from 18 starts. Saturday’s win took his earnings past $655,000.

Also, Welcometotheshow - bought for just $24,000 from the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale in 2023 - became a black type winner in taking the Tontonan Stakes over 1400m in a driving finish.

Bred and sold by Bowness Stud, and bought by his Ballarat trainer Tyler Donaldson-Aiken, the 5YO entire took his earnings near $500,000 with his seventh career victory.

At Rosehill, Inglis Classic Yearling Sale graduate Savvy Hallie showed her class again with her third black type victory, with the Brad Widdup-trained mare claiming the G2 Sheraco Stakes over 1200m.

Savvy Hallie crossed the field to lead from gate seven of eight under Nash Rawiller and held on tenaciously against several challengers in the home straight to score by 0.4 lengths.

The 4YO was a $320,000 Classic buy for owners BK Racing and Breeding from Riverstone Lodge’s draft. Saturday’s was her third G2 win and took her earnings the $1.1m mark.

It was an Inglis quinella, with Easter Yearling Sale product Gangsta Granny taking second.

One race earlier, another Inglis graduate Persian Wonder continued his impressive rise with an upset victory in the G3 Ming Dynasty Quality over 1400m for 3YOs.

Ridden by Ash Morgan, the David Payne-trained gelding settled worse than midfield and stormed home late between horses to win by 0.6 lengths.

Persian Wonder was a $160,000 purchase for Payne from the Cambridge Stud draft at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

The race saw an Easter trifecta, with Stormy Marco taking second and Tenenbaum third.
