The more experienced Silversands prevailed in a competitive renewal of the $250,000 RL Inglis Banner over 1000m at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Silversands ($35,000 2013 Classic, 2f Dubleo-Meriwether) was one of only five runners in the capacity 14 horse field that had already raced prior to Saturday and that experience showed, with jockey Michael Walker taking a late split between debutants Donelle and Cornrow to claim the major prize.

The Richard Jolly trained filly joins a notable list of winners of the juvenile event, which was renamed the ‘Inglis Banner’ in honour of 2008 inaugural winner and subsequent Australian and European Champion Sprinter Starspangledbanner.
Silversands is the third filly to win the $250,000 Inglis Race Series event in the last four years, joining Diamond Earth and Elite Falls. All three fillies had race experience on their side when lining up in the Inglis Banner.
"People probably underestimated her with her debut being back in Adelaide, but she had the benefit of that run and it showed today,” said Jolly.
"She was out of a mare that ran early and we thought she was an early type, that's why we paid up for the series and it's been justified,” Jolly added.
By Dubleo from two-year-old winning mare Meriwether (by Catbird), Silversands collected $150,000 plus trophies for Saturday’s victory, a long way ahead of the $35,000 paid by Jolly to secure the filly from the draft of Torryburn Stud at the 2013 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale – Summer Book in January.
Silversands was bred by Quicksilver co-founder Alan Green under his Echo Beach Bloodstock banner. Green retained a share in the speedy filly, racing her in partnership with Richard Jolly, Mr C M Fitzgerald, Mr P Hodgens, Mr G P Meyer and Vinery Stud’s Adam White.
In addition to the race prizemoney on offer, the winning trainer Richard Jolly received a set of Swarovski Optik EL 42 Swarovision binoculars valued at $3,000. The winning owners and winning jockey Michael Walker also received an exclusive piece of Antler Luggage.
The connections of placegetters Donelle and Cornrow only have to look back at the 2012 Inglis Banner to see they are in esteemed company, for yesterday’s Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate winner Shamus Award was third on debut in the Inglis Banner just 12 months ago.
The $5million Inglis Race Series moves to Sale VIC today for the running of the $100,000 Inglis Trophy over 1400m for three-year-olds. The race is restricted to horses nominated into the Inglis Race Series.
