Talented Snippetson two year-old Nobby Snip took another step up the ladder with a dominant win at Rosehill on Saturday for the Gai Waterhouse stable.
An easy winner at Kembla at his second race start, Nobby Snip was backed into favouritism for this tougher assignment and raced up on the pace before opening up a big lead in the middle stages for Tommy Berry before kicking on strongly to win the 1400 metre event by a length.
"I knew when we straightened it was going to take a good horse to get past him,” Berry said.
"He's a scopey type with a lovely big stride.”
A $185,000 purchase from the Widden Stud draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Nobby Snip (pictured as a yearling) is the fifth winner for imported mare Pine Away (USA), whose best progeny to date is Group I Tatts Winter Stakes winner Absolut Glam, a daughter of fertility troubled sire Snowland, a full brother to Nobby Snip's sire Snippetson.
Nobby Snip was the most expensive yearling by Snippetson sold in 2010 and is in fact his most expensive yearling full stop.
Pine Away has a weanling colt by Sebring and was covered by Stratum last spring.
Nobby Snip was one of two metropolitan juvenile winners for Snippetson on Saturday with the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, trained Snip 'n' Run saluting at Morphettville, his overall record now two wins and a second from three starts.
A $50,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of Emerald Thoroughbreds, Snip ‘n Run is from the Covetous mare Run for Cover, a half-sister to Group II winner Enforced.
Snippetson is the sire of five stakes horses led by Group II winner Fast Clip and will stand this spring at Widden Stud at a fee of $7,700.
