Smerdon filly blooms at Caulfield

Juvenile filly Bloomingdale Miss has lived up to her connections' confidence with a smart win in Saturday's Karen Clements Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield.

Bloomingdale Miss (pictured as yearling) had one previous start for a narrow defeat to the Patinack Farm filly Fandom at Cranbourne on July 11. Fandom franked the form with a win at Mornington midweek, leaving Rodd and trainer Robert Smerdon confident in the youngster's chances in her city debut.

"I rode her last start and Rob put a massive wrap on her,” Rodd said. "He said that she would be hard to beat first- up but she got softened up and just got nutted on the line.

"They were confident today that she would come out and get the job done. She had improved a lot and she has got a lot of scope around her.”

Bloomingdale Miss showed speed again to settle on the outside of the early leader Lamingtons before assuming control of the race at the 300 metres.

The daughter of Shamardal strode clear to score a comprehensive 1-1/4 length win. Bloomingdale Miss's win convinced Rodd the rising three-year-old would improve with more distance and race experience.

"We had it pretty easy up there,” Rodd said. "She pinged out really well. She's really well educated. She has got a really good style and I really like her.

"She could have come back if something wanted to go around us. We slowed up a fair bit and we really sprinted home.

"I think she would be better with a sit, with a few in front of her to run down because I don't think she is just a speedy two-year-old.”

The Peter Moody-trained Convene briefly looked a winning hope at the 200 metres but battled once she hit the inside section of the track to run second ahead of Lamingtons, which fought on bravely once headed.
