Smoko breathes fire at Belmont

The West Australian - Jay Rooney - Saturday, 6 July 2013

Excitement machine Smoko continued his rapid emergence as the next star of WA racing with a stunning win at Belmont Park today.

Starting a red-hot $1.30 favourite, Smoko crossed from his wide draw in the Slater Standing at Gold Front Thoroughbreds Handicap (1200m) to lead.

The son of Snitzel shook off a challenge from She's Quality early in the straight, but Celebrity Miss loomed large.

However, Smoko remarkably found another gear, racing away to extend his unbeaten streak to three.

The three-year-old beat Celebrity Miss by 2 3/4 lengths, with Virtual Trader finishing third.

Co-trainer Clint Price confirmed Smoko will be spelled and an Ascot summer carnival campaign will be considered.

Price was blown away by the victory.

"That was probably his best win to date," Price said.

"That was huge.

"I thought he would lob outside of the lead, but (William) Pike lobbed in front.

"He had to do a bit of work and I thought that might bring the others into it, but they couldn't get near him.

"To be able to kick again after doing a bit of work to cross, he's definitely something special.

"Obviously there are sprint races between 1000 and 1200 metres that will be suitable for him later this year.

"We'll give him a let-up now and have a sit down and work out a plan for his next campaign."

Smoko (3g Snitzel- London Lights) was a $75,000 purchase for owner Frank Fiore from the draft of Bellerive Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
