Solid Trade at Newmarket

More than $3million was traded on a busy second day of the Australian Weanling & Bloodstock Sale at Newmarket today.

The Select weanlings continued this morning, with the averaging improving from the opening session to realise $17,631 today, in addition to a supplementary average of $29,350 from the five youngsters sold.

“The weanling sale ended particularly well,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said. “It finished with an 88% clearance rate, which is outstanding and a credit to vendors for meeting the market.

“Competition on the better horses was very strong, with several potential buyers going home empty handed.

“No doubt vendors will be sending more good horses to this sale next year to capitalise on what has been a very strong market for the better weanlings on offer.”

Today’s selling brought the sale total for the Select Weanling session to $3,385,000 at an average of $15,818. The General Weanling session added another $103,450 to the sale total.

The day's highest price came for Lot 256 (pictured), a Fastnet Rock colt from the Anabaa mare Snake Mary, which sold for $130,000. The successful buyer was New Zealand based Michael Wallace, continuing on from his strong presence during the opening session. The bay colt’s dam Snake Mary is a sister to the Group 2 winner French Bid from the family of Group 1 winners Sudurka, Shot Of Thunder, Lachlan River and My Brilliant Star.

Wallace also secured the day’s second highest priced lot, Amarina Farm’s colt by Champion Sire elect Lonhro from Princess Pedrille, making him a three-quarter-sibling to Group 2 winner O’Lonhro and a grandson of the grand race mare Mamzelle Pedrille. The colt fetched $120,000 and will be re-offered as a yearling in 2012.

A Rock Of Gibraltar colt from Edinglassie Stud also fetched six figures today, with KP Thoroughbreds paying $100,000 for him.

“It was heartening to see that despite the currency difficulties we had strong competition from several South African buyers as well as a large contingent from New Zealand,” D’Arcy said.

“Victorians also had a strong presence, with several lots purchased to be re-offered at next year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.”

The supplementary entries were headed by Emerald Thoroughbreds’ Snitzel colt from Steal My Love, which went the way of Belmont Bloodstock and a Shamardal filly offered by Princes Farm, both of which fetched $50,000.

The weanling session was followed immediately by the Select Broodmares, where 82 mares sold for a gross of $1,653,950 and average of $20,170.

Tyreel Stud’s four-year-old mare Chordata was knocked down for a session topping $110,000 to Nick Vass Bloodstock. The Fusaichi Pegasus mare is a daughter of the former crack Danehill mare Dashing Eagle and was offered carrying a positive test to Flying Spur.

The $110,000 figure was matched later in the day when Marina Belle, prepared for sale by Emerald Thoroughbreds, was sold to Evergreen Stud. The Last Tycoon mare was sold in foal to High Chaparral. The subsequent foal will be a close relation to High Chaparral’s Champion French Two and Three-Year-Old Joanna.

Horses passed in during today’s session are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service. Interested parties can view a photograph of all passed in horses on the Make an Offer website.

The sale concludes tomorrow with General Broodmares, including a Supplementary section, followed by stallions, yearlings and racehorses. This section includes an enticing supplementary entry of 43 yearlings and racehorses.
