Spicy Martini proves too hot for her rivals in G1 Stradbroke

The $8000 Inglis Digital purchase Spicy Martini (Justify) scored a fairytale G1 victory today, leading in an Inglis graduates trifecta in the $3m Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

The talented 4YO mare has been ultra consistent for her trainer Toby Edmonds since he purchased her in the 2023 March (Early) Sale as a yearling.

She has raced 12 times for six wins and incredibly has now earned almost $2.7m in prizemoney.

Spicy Martini (pictured) led in an Inglis graduates 1-2-3 today, defeating Sepals and Von Hauke and in doing so became the 124th individual Inglis graduate to win a G1 since 2018 following the success earlier in the day of G1 JJ Atkins-winning colt Tron Bolt.

Spicy Martini joins Headley Grange (Kingsford Smith Cup) as a fellow Inglis Digital graduate to win a G1 during this year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival, a period Inglis graduates have dominated with Tron Bolt (JJ Atkins), Fireball Miss (Queensland Oaks) and Providence (Queensland Derby) also enjoying G1 success over the past few weeks in Brisbane.

Spicy Martini’s trainer Toby Edmonds struggled to hold back tears post-race.

“It’s very exciting, quite emotional to be honest, just a great effort from everybody involved but mostly from the horse, she’s a beautiful horse,’’ Edmonds said.

“It’s a 12-month build-up and to get it done today is unbelievable.

“I’ve got to mention my farrier, he’s a legend, to get this filly to do what she’s done and to be as sound as she is, it’s amazing.’’

The furthest Spicy Martini had raced prior to today was over the 1400m in last year’s Stradbroke, where she finished 15th but Edmonds’ partner and the mare’s managing owner Holly Penfold was never concerned.

“Toby was very confident she’d run the 1400m and even a mile and beyond wouldn’t be past her, she’s just so versatile and she was really pulling away at the end from what was a very good field today,’’ Penfold said.

“It opens up a lot of options for the spring for her, she could go anywhere. I’m sure there’ll be interest in her for an Everest slot, there’s G1 races over a mile and beyond as well as the sprints so the world really is her oyster.

“She’s a completely different horse this year, she’s come on so much and if she can stay sound, she’s proven she’s up there with the best of them.’’

Meanwhile the Inglis Digital success stories continued in Perth this afternoon when Western Empire (Iffraaj) won the G3 Strickland Stakes at Belmont.

It’s a third consecutive Group win for the Grant and Alana Williams-trained Western Empire in the past month following previous victories in the G3 Hyperion Stakes and G3 Belmont Sprint.

Western Empire is a 14-time overall winner – he cost $150,000 on Inglis Digital to Dean Harvey’s Yevrah Investments from John Leek – and has since won more than $2.3m in additional prizemoney.

Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital June (Late) Online Sale, which will run from June 19-24.

The sale will include G2-winning filly Double Market and Chayan’s three-quarter sister Takemine.

Entries will remain open until midnight Wednesday (June 17).
