Star Team Make Another Shrewd Choice

Leon Corstens and the Newmarc/Spicer Bloodstock team combined to win the very first bonus in the rich Inglis Race Series two seasons back with a Choisir colt and history repeated at Sandown today.

TOKUGAWA ($55,000 Easter II, 3c Choisir-Tirumani) was a debut winner at Wangaratta earlier this month and comfortably made the quantum leap to Saturday metro grade in picking up the $100,000 bonus in the Inglis Bonus Handicap (1400m).

Adding on the $42,700 first prize, Tokugawa has now repaid the faith Troy Corstens and Brad Spicer placed in him three times over, having securing the colt from the Kia Ora Stud draft at last year’s Easter sale.

The same duo went to $120,000 to secure the Choisir colt from Gold Anthem at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Named Starspangledbanner, he debuted for the Leon Corstens stable when taking the $250,000 Inglis Juvenile (since renamed the Inglis Banner) on Cox Plate day 2008.

Of course he graduated from that race to dual Group 1 winner in Australia before dominating Europe in June and July this year. In between he was secured in a $10million stud deal by Coolmore.

Tokugawa may never reach those heights, but already connections have enjoyed a financial windfall and he seemingly has a promising future ahead of him.

The Inglis race series turns to Canberra tomorrow, with several youngsters vying for a $50,000 bonus in the Black Opal Qualifier.
