Shamardal filly Faint Perfume made history today as the first Group 1 winner to graduate from the highly successful Easter Part II Session of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
In the process she became the sixth straight G1 VRC Oaks winner for Inglis graduates, following Hollow Bullet ($10,000 Premier), Serenade Rose ($400,000 Easter), Miss Finland ($450,000 Easter), Arapaho Miss ($22,500 Premier) and Samantha Miss ($1.5million Easter).
FAINT PERFUME (P$40,000 2008 Easter II, 3f Shamardal-Zona) became the dominant VRC Oaks favourite when a runaway winner of Saturday’s G2 Wakeful Stakes and she justified the short quote when joining in easily soon after turning before gunning down Encosta De Lago filly Valdemoro to claim the $1million Group 1 feature.
The win continues a memorable carnival for Bart Cummings, with this victory being the 81-year-old Hall of Famer’s 81st Group 1 win at Flemington.
“She’s a very good staying filly,” Cummings said. “She’s only about 15 hands, but she’s got a big heart and she stays very well.
“Unlike the Melbourne Cup there was good speed and it gave the backmarkers every chance to pick them up.”
Easter Part II was first introduced to the sales calendar last year and it proved an instant hit with buyers and vendors alike.
Faint Perfume is joined by Lovemelikearock and Run For Naara as stakes winning fillies from that inaugural sale and the keen buying bench at this year’s sale suggests similar results can be expected from the next crop.
“The 2009 sale had a clearance of 85%, with $5million traded at an average of $66,000, underlining how this format has been very, very well received,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said.
“Vendors have really supported the concept and buyers have quickly recognised the quality that is available at this sale.”
A catalogue of about 100 yearlings will be offered at the 2010 Easter Part II session.
Today’s win was also noteworthy for being the first Group 1 winner for Darley shuttler Shamardal, who may well have claimed the VRC Classic double had warm pre-post Victoria Derby favourite Shamoline Warrior ($60,000 2008 Premier) not been a race morning scratching.
A half brother to FAINT PERFUME by Pendragon has also been entered for the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to be held on April 6 to 8, during the peak of Sydney’s Autumn Carnival between the STC Golden Slipper and AJC Derby Days.
