Making his first start since finishing sixth in the Bernborough Stakes at Doomben last December, the Allan Denham-trained Strat’s Flyer held off a spirited bid by race favourite Kroner to land Wednesday’s $100,000 Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford.
The 5yo gelding earned his first stakes-success at his 25th race start. The chestnut has been a model of consistency throughout his career, compiling a record of 6 wins, 8 seconds and 3 thirds for earnings of $368,750.
A $75,000 purchase from the 2005 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, Strat’s Flyer is the second stakes-winner from the first two foals of the lightly raced Hennessy mare Scot’s Flyer. His 3yo half-sister Bauble captured this years Arrow Training Services Stakes (LR) at Moonee Valley.
The third dam of Scot’s Flyer, Just So (Sobig), is a full-sister to the outstanding Sobar (Caulfield Guineas and Caulfield Cup) and a half-sister to S.A. Derby (G1) winner Tasman.
Scot’s Flyer has a yearling filly by Arena and was bred back to Bernardini (USA) last year after not being served the previous season.
Strat’s Flyer (pictured) becomes the 20th stakes-winner for Darley Stud’s Strategic. After a few quiet seasons the son of Zeditave was back in favour with breeders’ last spring following on from the success of the ill-fated champion 2yo Meurice.
After 12 seasons at Cootamundra, Strategic will move to Darley's Victorian Farm, Northwood Park, this spring where his fee will remain at $16,500.
