Stratum 3YO Surprises

Breednet - Tara Madgwick - Saturday, 18 December 2010

Pre-race discussion centred on the return of Group I winner Toorak Toff at Flemington on Saturday, but it was ‘Mr Consistency’, Eclair Mystic, who got the job done.

The Robert Smerdon trained son of Stratum put together four straight wins last preparation before heading to the paddock to recover from an injury and after a spell of 36 weeks resumed with a brilliant first up win over Broken and Secret Flyer in the open sprint over 1000 metres.

Eclair Mystic settled off the pace for Chris Symons before powering home over the last furlong to win by half a length, his overall record now an impressive five wins from six starts with prizemoney of $184,475.

Eclair Mystic (pictured as a yearling) was a $230,000 purchase from the draft of Lustre Lodge at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and was a successful pinhook having been bought for $160,000 from the Swettenham Stud Dispersal of weanlings in 2008.

Eclair Mystic is the sixth winner for former top class At Talaq (USA) filly Leica Smile, winner of the Group One SAJC Australasin Oaks.

A member of the famous ‘Leica family’ Leica Smile is a daughter of Group Two winner Leica Western and a half-sister to stakes-winner Dansino (dam of stakes-winner Zagreb) and stakes-placed Leica Vista (dam of Group Two winner Moon Dragon).

Stratum is the leading second season sire by Australian winners with Eclair Mystic looming as a likely new stakes-winner for his sire in the near future.
