$160,000 is not a lot to pay for a colt by champion sire Redoute’s Choice, which is why promising three year-old Raphael’s Cat (pictured as a yearling) found himself as one of the cheapest yearlings by his sire at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
The Gai Waterhouse trained colt won on debut at Rosehill back in February before finishing down the track in the Group II ATC Pago Pago Stakes won by Tarquin.
Returning from his winter spell at Canterbury on Wednesday, Raphael’s Cat led throughout and strode away to win the 1200 metre benchmark 67 event by a dominant two and a half lengths.
Waterhouse was well pleased with the win and believes there are better things in store for Raphael’s Cat.
"He’s a lovely colt and we’ll look for a Group race for him over the carnival,” she said.
A $160,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Gai Waterhouse/James Harron Bloodstock from the Arrowfield Stud draft, Raphael’s Cat was the third least expensive of 22 yearlings by Redoute’s Choice sold at that sale.
He is the second foal and first winner for US Group II winner Cat by the Tale (USA), a Tale of the Cat daughter of Group III winner St Clair Ridge.
Arrowfield Stud sold the full sister to Raphael’s Cat at Inglis Easter this year to Vinery Stud for $400,000 and Cat by the Tale has a yearling filly by Animal Kingdom (USA) and is in foal to Smart Missile.
