Super opening day at Easter Broodmare Sale

The 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale got off to a strong start in Sydney today with the Super Select Session mares recording an average of $135,748 for the 133 sold.

Starting at 10:30am it didn’t take long for the bids to start flowing in on the young fillies and proven producers catalogued, with dual Group One winner Response (pictured) just the sixth offering for the day selling for $840,000 to SF Bloodstock.

Today was the daughter of Charge Forward’s second visit to the Newmarket sale ring, having been purchased for $50,000 from the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2008 by Barrie and Midge Griffiths for whom she recorded two Group One wins and amassed $836,575 in prizemoney on the track before her successful sale today.

Just 20 lots later Sharp Susan demanded all the attention of the investors at Inglis as the American Group Two winner was sold in foal to Street Cry to Badgers Bloodstock for $1,050,000. Offered by Tyreel Stud as agent for the Dispersal of Paul Fleming Thoroughbreds the blue-blooded mare will be exported to continue her breeding career at a leading stud in South Africa.

The other offering today to pass six figures was Group Two winner Mimi Lebrock which was purchased from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud in foal to Exceed And Excel by Baramul Stud for $1,025,000.

Dual Group One winner and 2010/11 New Zealand Champion Two-Year-Old Anabandana was earlier offered by Broadwater Thoroughbreds as agent and was snapped up by James Bester Bloodstock for $720,000.

Bester also signed for young stakes winning mare Lisson Grove in foal to Fastnet Rock for $575,000.

Other mares to make $500,000 or more today were Custard ($575,000 in foal to Fastnet Rock), Just Dancing ($540,000 in foal to Commands) and Valdemoro ($500,000 in foal to Choisir).

“Young stakes winning mares straight off the track or in foal to the hot sires were again highly sought after and today’s Super Select Session has well and truly established itself as the place to offer those fillies and mares,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“There were plenty of astute purchases amongst the $18million traded today and as proven in the past with the dams of Black Caviar, So You Think and Sepoy you can certainly pick up a bargain at the Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale,” Webster said.

Black Caviar’s dam Helsinge was purchased an as unraced three-year-old for $115,000 at the 2005 Easter Broodmare Sale before being sent to stud, producing Black Caviar, Moshe, $1million colt All Too Hard and last week’s $2.6million Easter sale topping yearling.

Triassic, the dam of So You Think, was purchased from Easter Broodmare for just $16,000 before being sent to High Chaparral; with globetrotting champion So You Think the resultant offspring.

The dams of Champion Two-year-old Sepoy and Melbourne Cup winners Shocking and Viewed were also purchased from the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale prior to their progeny’s Group One victories.

The 2012 Easter Broodmare continues tomorrow with the next selection of Select Session mares; Lots 224 to 456

The sale concludes on Thursday April 18 with the General Session mares; Lots 457 to 668
