That’s why this Lady is a champ!

Star filly Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) added a second G1 to her resume at just her sixth career start with a tenacious victory in today’s Surround Stakes at Randwick.

The Chris Waller-trained 3YO asserted herself one of the best of her generation when winning the G1 Flight Stakes by three lengths in the spring.

And she has returned as an autumn filly in arguably stronger fashion, keeping her unbeaten campaign intact in the classiest of styles.

Today’s victory was full of courage as Lady Shenandoah had to fight the entire Randwick home straight to fend off Golden Slipper champion Lady of Camelot to secure the win.

Lady Shenandoah has now won four consecutive races – having been placed at her first two career starts – and took her prizemoney earnings past the $1.2m barrier.

Today’s time of 1:20.56 was a race record for the Surround Stakes.

Racing in the colours of her owner and yearling buyer Hermitage Thoroughbreds, Lady Shenandoah is a $525,000 Easter Yearling Sale graduate from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, who bred the filly with Planette Thoroughbreds.

She is one of 103 individual Inglis graduates to have won a G1 since 2018.

Arrowfield’s Jon Freyer was proud of the fight Lady Shenandoah showed in the ferocious battle today.

“They’re a top-class bunch of fillies, they paraded that way before the race and what a battle it was out there,’’ Freyer said.

“She really had to work for it today, she’s such a determined filly and it was a great fighting effort.

“Lady of Camelot is a quality filly and threw everything at Lady Shenandoah but our filly just proved too strong and too tough.’’

Waller added: “I could see that she’d accelerated and then I realised Lady of Camelot was with her, and she’s a Golden Slipper winner…but sure enough [Lady Shenandoah] lifted when it mattered and it was good to see her fight and be dominant.

“She’s a dream, we look after her, as we do all our horses to try and get the best out of them and encourage them to develop with time. That’s what we did with her. She’s got a massive career ahead.’’

Arrowfield will offer a Maurice half brother (ex Star Pupil) to Lady Shenandoah as lot 187 at this year’s Easter Sale, at Riverside on April 6 and 7.
