Tivaci showed his class with a dominant victory in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas - now trainer Mike Moroney wants to add a Group 1 to his resume.
The three-year-old colt was far too strong on Saturday, sitting just off the speed before bursting clear in the straight to beat High Spirit and Sold For Song with Mr Individual in fourth.
The margin was a length-and-a-quarter, but it could’ve been even more if Tivaci had run truly - one of the frustrations for Moroney.
“He’s a very good horse - he’s just got to iron his problems out,” the Flemington trainer told Racing.com.
“It looked like he was going to win by four or five - absolutely bolt in - but then he started wandering out.
“He’s such a good type and such a lovely horse, you’d like to find a stud for him at some stage.
“But he’s not helping himself - he’s got Group 1 talent.”
The win ensured the team came away with something positive from the Queensland trip.
“We went up there to win the Queensland Guineas or even the Stradbroke, we think he’s that good,” Moroney said.
“He’s had a lot of bad luck. It’s been a frustrating time for him.”
Moroney says they’re yet to nail down what to do with Tivaci but getting a top-line win to establish a career as a stallion is a priority.
“In the spring he’ll be aimed at the Group 1 mile (races),” he said.
“We’ll probably leave him a colt for the spring at least, because we’d like to find a stud for him.”
