The Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale swung into Day Three on Tuesday where studmasters and part-owners of freshmen sires competed against new bloodstock investors and the year’s leading yearling sale vendors.
“It is great to see a vast variety of buyers here, from stallion syndicates to new international players and the top Easter Yearling Sale vendors all investing in breeding stock,” pointed out Jonathan D’Arcy, Inglis National Bloodstock Director.
“Young stallions such as Dissident, Deep Field, Akeed Mofeed and Vancouver are all due to cover some top quality mares out of this week’s sale, which is best placed to ensure buyers can get in to the popular stallions before the Book Full signs go up,” added D’Arcy.
276 mares and race fillies have been purchased over the last two days at an average of $47,526, with five lots selling for $300,000 or more today.
The top priced broodmare today was Phantom Queen (Lot 490) bought by Julia Ritchie’s Bangaloe Stud. Offered from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, the mare, which is carrying a three-quarter-relation to Group 1 winner Sweet Idea, was secured for $440,000.
Ritchie, who is part-owner of two-year-old sensation Vancouver, is looking forward to supporting the colt when he retires to Coolmore Stud in 2016 saying “I’m working on building up my broodmare band ready for when Vancouver hits the ground next year.”
“I liked how she carried light for a pregnant mare. I don’t like them to be too coarse, she was very refined, and in foal to Snitzel (the sire of her Group 1-winning half-sister Sweet Idea) it was a no-brainer,” Ritchie said.
In addition to the top priced Lot, Arrowfield Stud have sold another eight Lots to date in the Select Broodmare Session shooting them to the top of the vendors’ table, amassing a total of $1,454,000.
Bangaloe Stud also signed for Sonoma (Lot 565). Out of a half-sister to Denman and carrying a foal by Pierro, the mare was purchased for $205,000 from the draft of Coolmore Stud.
Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock outbid Australia’s newest international players Spendthrift Farm to the tune of $420,000 to secure Red Dress Marley (Lot 516) that was offered in foal to Snitzel as Lot 516 from the draft of Enak Pty Ltd. Gabbedy said that “today’s purchase was for John Muir’s Milburn Creek Stud to add to his boutique broodmare band.”
“She is a young well-related stakes-placed mare with plenty of upside, and in foal to Snitzel. Milburn have obviously had tremendous success with that sire,” added Gabbedy, alluding to the fact that Muir sold the sale topper (Snitzel x Admirelle) at the recent Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $2,200,000.
Topping the Select Race Fillies and Mares today was Group 1 placed three-year-old Golconda (Lot 582). The third-placed runner of the Group 1 VRC Oaks was secured by Michael Wallace on behalf of China Horse Club from the draft of Eliza Park International for $400,000.
“She’s a nice mare, we bought her in partnership with Newgate so she’ll go straight to stud and will be supporting Dissident this year,” said Wallace.
Along with Golconda, China Horse Club purchased a further three Lots, for a total outlay of $930,000, including Pink Jubilee (Lot 493), the sister to South African triple Group 1 winner Alboran Sea carrying a foal to Sepoy for $270,000 from the draft of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds.
“Pink Jubilee will also visit Dissident this season, while we also look forward to selling the Sepoy as a yearling in Australia,” added Michael Wallace.
Dissident is set to stand his first season at Newgate Farm alongside other freshmen sires Wandjina and Deep Field, the latter of which is set to cover the top producing mare Johan’s Toy that was purchased yesterday by Alan Bell at the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale.
Other leading buyers today include Duncan Grimley’s Glastonbury Farm, which spent $310,000 on four Lots, and Paul Guy’s Heritage Bloodstock which spent a further $223,000 on four Lots.
Day Two’s leading buyers Yu Long Investments Australia Pty Ltd spent a further $97,000 on another three Lots today, taking their total spend to $1,202,000 so far in the Select Broodmare session.
Horses passed in during today’s session are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.
The final day of the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale will begin at 10.30am, with the remaining Select Broodmares (Lots 669 to 818), followed by the two supplementary Select mares (Lots 886 and 887), before finishing with the General Broodmares (Lots 819 to 884).
