Trainer Norman Waymouth aims high with Mister Milton

Norman Waymouth is shooting for the top shelf with Mister Milton, who broke his maiden status with a decisive win in the John Moule Handicap at Caulifled.

Waymouth is aiming at the $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) with Mister Milton, a youngster, ironically, bred by Rick Hore-Lacy.

Mister Milton, purchased by Waymouth for $7500 at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale, will return to Caulfield on Australia Day for the $100,000 Listed Race Zeditave Stakes (1200m).

“I’ve always had a massive opinion of this horse,” Waymouth said. “I’m going big time. I’m aiming for the Australian Guineas.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the horse, he’s just been one of those horses that has been in the wrong spot at the wrong time

“He’s taken on the best. He deserves this win.”

Mister Milton, backed from $7 to $6.50, finished strongly to win by one length from Song Of The Bell, which firmed from $6 to $5.

Rescue Mission, heavily supported from $4.60 to $3.70 favourite, hit the front inside the 300m, but could not hold out the first two placegetters.

Waymouth, who rode former champion juvenile Rancher, described Mister Milton as “a lovely find”.

“I’ve put him in the best company and asked him to do everything. I was a little worried about the 1100 m., if it had been 1200 m I thought he was a certainty.”

Melham believes that break-through win by Mister Milton will prove beneficial as he steps up to better races.

“He will improve mentally. I think now that he’s won a race he will be able to string a couple together,” Melham said.
