22nd May 2012
A colt from the first crop of G1 Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted topped the opening day of the 2012 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale in Melbourne when selling for $117,500.
Bred by Lee Fleming, the day’s star weanling (pictured) is one of only 30 colts from the first crop of Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 winning son Wanted, which stands at Eliza Park Stud in Victoria. Offered by Eliza Park as Lot 138 the close relation to recent stakes placed two-year-old Saturn Rock was purchased by Ascot Heath Pty Ltd of New South Wales.
In all 142 weanlings were traded at Oaklands on Tuesday for a total gross of $1,304,500.
“Typical for most weanling sales the last few years, there was plenty of interest in the progeny of first season sires along with good competition on attractive types by proven sires, often exceeding vendors’ expectations,” Inglis Melbourne Director Peter Heagney said.
“Buyers are able to be very selective in the current market, but there is no doubt plenty of demand for the right article with both the pedigree and conformation.
“The clearance rate kept rising throughout the day as vendors met the market and we look forward to Day Two where we’ll offer another 200 great value weanlings, including some very nice types by Encosta de Lago, Not A Single Doubt, Written Tycoon, Charge Forward, Testa Rossa and Choisir,” Heagney added.
Ascot Heath Pty Ltd finished the day as the leading individual buyer, adding Swettenham Stud’s Manhattan Rain-Amouage colt, Lot 168, to their stock for $57,500 later in the session.
Clients of respected bloodstock agent Paul Willets had great success selling yearlings at this year’s Australasian sales that had been purchased by Willetts at last year’s Great Southern Weanling Sale. Willetts was back again today, buying three lots for $82,000; A colt by Nicconi for $54,000, a colt by Von Costa de Hero for $18,000 and filly by Perfectly Ready for $10,000.
Weanlings that passed in on the opening day of the Great Southern Sale are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer service.
The Great Southern Weanling Sale continues from 10:30am on Wednesday May 23 with Lots 207 to 406 and 810 to 817 to be offered.
Two days of weanlings will be followed by two days of broodmares and mixed bloodstock.
The Great Southern Bloodstock Sale will be staged on May 24 and 25. This section of the sale includes broodmares, stallions, yearlings, racehorses and unbroken stock.
