Weanling Demand Drives Results At Great Southern Sale

The 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale concluded Day One having sold 141 weanlings at an outstanding average of $23,550, a 59% increase on the 2014 figure. Gross rose 50% to $3,320,500, and median nearly doubled from $6,000 to $11,000.

“The innovative structure of this year’s sale with a Platinum session and a General session has already delivered exceptional results, and we are extremely pleased to see today’s average increase by nearly 60% on the 2014 average,” said Inglis Victorian Director Peter Heagney.

“There was an abundance of buyers for the quality weanlings; my only regret is that we didn’t have more. Pinhookers were extremely active as were investors looking to buy weanlings to retain to race,” Heagney said.

“We still have many good weanlings to be sold tomorrow and I see no reason why those weanlings won’t be in demand again,” added Heagney.

Topping the sale was Lot 15 (Fastnet Rock x Festival Princess), after being passed in for $140,000 was sold privately for $150,000 to New Zealand’s Hyde Park Bloodstock. From the draft of Erinvale Thoroughbreds, the colt by Fastnet Rock is the third foal of Irish-bred mare Festival Princess, which has had one foal to race for one winner.

Hyde Park outlaid a further $48,000 on another two colts; Lot 120 (Manhattan Rain x Princess Ruhie) from Shadwell Farm and Lot 165 (Hinchinbrook x Table Mesa) from Two Bays Farm.

Leading buyer after Day One was Paul Willetts Bloodstock, who signed for eight Lots on behalf of a range of clients at a total outlay of $391,000.

“I came here to buy some nice horses, I have some clients looking to pinhook and some looking to race, so these weanlings will fill a range of purposes,” said Willetts.

Topping his purchases was Lot 60 (Not A Single Doubt x La Dolce Diva), a lovely filly from a daughter of Makybe Diva secured from the draft of Makybe for $100,000.

Willetts’ last purchase of the day Lot 189 (Stryker x World Exclusive) by young Victorian sire Stryker out of the New Zealand-bred mare World Exclusive will be heading to New Zealand destined to be pinhooked. The colt, a relation to two winners, was purchased from Stonehouse Thoroughbreds for $40,000.

Lot 162 (Choisir x Swift Sands) from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm was purchased for $15,000 with the intention to race.

“She was very good value for money. She is a nice correct little race filly by Choisir, I am very happy with her,” Willetts added.

Burnewang North sold all seven of their offerings today, leading the Vendors Table (3 or more sold) by both average ($58,429) and aggregate ($409,000).

Weanlings from the second crop of Smart Missile proved particularly popular pushing the young sire to the top of the Sires’ Table, with three well-conformed youngsters netting $247,000 and averaging $82,333.

Horses passed in during today’s session are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.

The second day of the 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale will begin tomorrow at 10.30am, with the remaining Platinum Weanlings (Lots 201 to 259) followed by the General Weanlings (Lots 260 to 354). Broodmares will commence selling from Lot 355.

The auction will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live and Online Bidding will again be available.
