Weanlings Set Record Average At Great Southern Sale

Day Two of the 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale saw a continuation of impressive results through to the completion of the Weanling Sessions, and a promising start to the Broodmare Session.

A further 42 Platinum weanlings were sold today, taking the average for that session to $24,368 across a total of 192 Lots. 78 General weanlings were sold grossing $539,950, taking the average price for weanlings across both sessions to a record $19,329.

The sale’s top priced weanling was sold today as Lot 241 (Exceed And Excel x Common Smytzer) from Makybe, which was secured for $300,000 by Victoria’s Ampulla Lodge and New Zealand’s Ascot Farm in partnership. The son of Champion Sire Exceed And Excel is the full-brother to Group 3 winner Exceedingly Good, and at least the half-brother to three other winners.

Ampulla Lodge’s Steve Jostlear and Ascot Farm’s Maureen Harvey were satisfied the partnership had purchased a truly premium product.

“He is the best colt we’ve seen all year. I’ve looked at every colt in every sale, and he is the best by a long way,“ said Jostlear.

“Pedigree-wise he ticked all the boxes, and type also. He’s a great example of the sire” added Harvey.

“I gave him a carrot and he ate it, you know that’s the one when they eat the carrot!” joked Jostlear.

Makybe’s Lorraine Swanson said the farm was understandably delighted with the result.

“The colt has had plenty of interest but we honestly didn’t expect such a great result,“ said Swanson.

“There were about six different sets of people that had multiple looks, there were heaps of hits on his X-Rays also, and we knew that they were pretty much spot on,“ Swanson said.

“The weanlings we brought here have sold well because we didn’t come here to cull, we breed from a boutique band of broodmares and we aim to produce really quality stock. Selling these allows us to focus on a small draft of premium stock that we will sell as yearlings next year,” added Swanson.

Burnewang North Pastoral had a particularly successful weanling sale, selling all 22 of their offerings for an average of $36,761, shooting them to the top of the Vendors’ Table by aggregate.

Paul Willetts remained at the top of the Weanling Buyers’ Table having spent a total of $488,000 on ten Lots. Other buyers that were particularly active today were Ampulla Lodge, Wattle Grove Thoroughbreds and Hyde Park Bloodstock.

Not A Single Doubt overtook Smart Missile to lead the Sires’ Table (three or more sold) by average ($93,333), amassing $280,000 on all three of his youngsters that were offered.

Following the weanling sessions, 52 broodmares were sold grossing $648,400. The top price paid for a broodmare was $160,000 for the Redoute’s Choice mare Illusional (Lot 403). The dam of Group 2 winners Chase The Rainbow and Ms Funovits was purchased by Caulfield trainer John Salanitri on behalf of his client Eddie Hirsch.

“He (Eddie) told me to look at three mares for him and this one he really liked,” said Salanitri.

“He has an open mind as to which stallion he sends her to, though it will most probably be one of Darley’s stallions,” Salanitri said.

“I told him for the last six bids we had her, but the other guy kept chipping away. It only takes two for the price to be rich, and he hates losing!” Salanitri added.

Horses passed in during today’s session are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.

The remainder of the Broodmare Session (Lots 435 to 618) along with supplementary broodmares (Lots 740 to 762) and a stallion (Lot 619) will begin selling from 10.30am tomorrow, the third day of the 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

The auction will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live and Online Bidding will again be available.
