Yorkshire leads in Inglis trifecta in $2m The Ingham

Progressive 5YO Yorkshire (Snitzel) led in a trifecta of Inglis graduates in today’s $2m G2 The Ingham at Randwick, in doing so taking his career record to an impressive eight wins from just 11 starts.

Yorkshire is developing into one of the most consistent horses in Sydney racing – he has won almost $1.7m in earnings and doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon, with the G1 Doncaster Mile in April firmly on the agenda for next year.

Mark Player and Rob Roulston teamed up to purchase Yorkshire for $575,000 at the Easter Yearling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft.

Having won six of his first eight starts, the SF Bloodstock-bred Yorkshire started a dominant $3.40 first-up this campaign in the $1m The Hunter at Newcastle a month ago but finished last, suffering from cardiac arrhythmia.

The performance put plenty of doubt in the minds of those closest to him as to how the rest of this campaign would play out but he has since raced twice for victories in the G3 Festival Stakes and now the $2m The Ingham.

Co-trainer Tom Charlton admitted he was unsure whether Yorkshire (pictured) would make today’s grand final following that Hunter run.

“But huge credit to the horse and the staff. We were in a spot of both after that first up run but full credit to everyone who has worked hard with him,’’ Charlton said.

“He’s a really tough horse. We knew he’d bounce back but whether or not he’d get to his grand final today or not and be able to produce a performance like that was up for debate.

“His record sums him up and he’s not the finished article yet which is exciting.

“The Doncaster, he’ll have to keep improving but it’s the type of race we’ll look towards for sure.’’

Newgate’s Henry field added: “He’s a beauty. He was astutely selected by Mark Player and Rob Roulston for a great group of owners and has been handled impeccably by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, developing him into one of the better older horses in Sydney racing.

“He was a lovely horse at Easter, a beautiful yearling but was a bit immature so it’s come as no surprise to me to see him developing the older he gets and the future looks bright for him.’’

Newgate will offer a 14-strong draft at Inglis’ first live sale of 2026, the Classic Yearling Sale, at Riverside on February 8-10.

“It’s a much smaller draft for us than usual at Classic but a much more select draft, with yearlings by the likes of Extreme Choice and Too Darn Hot,’’ Field said.

“We’re taking a much more boutique approach to the sale in 2026 but there’s some beautiful yearlings there and we can’t wait to get to Riverside in February.’’

Newgate will also be represented by a draft of 19 yearlings at the Premier Yearling Sale.

Having sold Everest winner Think About It at Premier in 2020, Newgate will bring a draft including the offspring of the likes of Extreme Choice, Frankel, Snitzel, Stay Inside etc to Oaklands in 2026.

Yorkshire defeated fellow Inglis graduates Estadio Mestalla and Robusto today and since 2019, Inglis graduates have now won 140 Open $1m+ races in Australia.

Meanwhile at Eagle Farm today The Black Cloud (Shamus Award) scored a valuable first Stakes success when winning the Listed Bribie Handicap.

The 5YO mare – bred by G&C Pastoral Co - is a $100,000 Classic Yearling Sale buy for her trainer Joe Pride and Proven Thoroughbreds, from the draft of Golden Grove.

The Black Cloud has now won five of her 16 starts for almost $550,000 in prizemoney.
