Held on the cusp of the breeding season it was no surprise to see many buyers in attendance at the inaugural 2007 Inglis Scone Broodmare Sale at White Park.
Both mares off the track as well as those in foal were in demand. The top price of the sale went the way of Lot 139, the Group One placed Orpen (USA) mare Zenarta. Lightly raced, the mare offers her new buyer, the Queensland based Lakeview Stud, who paid $110,000 for the mare, the opportunity to send her to her any stallion in the upcoming breeding season.
Lot 140, the Danzero mare Zerostar, fetched $67,500 to the final bid of Mr Doug Newbury. Offered by Southern Cross Breeders, the mare was offered in foal to last season’s leading First Season Sire, Johannesburg (USA).
Knocked down to Inglis as agent for $60,000, Lot 38, a two in one package of the Spectacular Spy (USA) mare Elishir and her Magic Albert filly foal at foot were offered on behalf of Toikan Park as agent. Already the dam of the Listed Gold Coast Goldmarket Handicap winner Shepishir, the mare has an excellent 100% winner to runner ratio.
Presented in foal to the multiple Group One winning Danehill (USA) stallion Elvstroem, Catwalk Miss ( Lot 19), a half-brother to dual Western Australian stakes winner Irish Pride was purchased by Mr Patrick Arcella for $55,000.
The select catalogue assembled was marred by some late withdrawals partly due to the hold up in quarantine at the shuttle stallion base at Eastern Creek. Despite this, many of the industry’s leading breeders in attendance for the weekend’s stallion parades ventured over to White Park to observe what looks sure to be an annual event in the heartland of the Australian Thoroughbred Breeding Industry.
The sale was well attended not only by numerous local buyers, but lots were also knocked down to South African, Philippine and New Zealand interests.
Lot 48, the Flying Spur mare Flying Bubbles was a prime example of the internationalisation of the industry. Purchased by South African Lionel Cohen, the winning mare is a three-quarter sister to the history making Redoute’s Choice colt purchased by fellow South African Charles Laird at the William Inglis & Son Easter Yearling sale last year.
William Inglis & Son Director Jonathan D’Arcy was extremely pleased with the results achieved, indicating that, “Mares which had commercial appeal in today’s market sold extremely well and exceed vendor’s expectations. We will certainly be holding the sale again next year and we look forward to receiving greater support from the Hunter Valley breeders.”
Newmarket will hold the next sale on the Inglis Calendar, with the 2007 Spring Thoroughbred Sale set down for Friday, September 28. The supplementary catalogue closes on Friday September 21, and entry forms can be downloaded here, or available by contacting the Newmarket office on 02 9399 7999.
