The new dates and format of the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale were due to turn heads and excellent results in 2014 clearly validated the auction’s position as Australia’s headline breeding stock sale.

“Innovation is always at the forefront of our minds at Inglis and we are very pleased that moving the broodmares from Easter and Sydney weanlings from June into one streamlined sale in May has been a winner for both vendors and buyers,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

Buyers spent $23,212,450 on 160 weanlings and 405 mares over three days in Sydney. A big plus for vendors was that their proceeds were paid by 18 June, a great help to breeders with stallion fees due in the 2013/14 financial year.

The 2014 average Select Weanling Sale price of $34,285 was a huge 48% up on the figure recorded in June 2013. The median was up 62% to $17,000 and the clearance rate finished at a very strong 87%.

A Fastnet Rock colt topped the superb weanling session selling to Belmont Bloodstock for $450,000. Offered by Coolmore Stud as Lot 150 the outstanding colt from two-year-old stakes winner Delta Girl is the most expensive weanling sold in Sydney since 2008.

Weanlings from the first crop of dual hemisphere champion racehorse So You Think were in high demand headed by Lot 119, Lustre Lodge’s colt half-brother to Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights, which sold to Coolmore Australia for $290,000. Other weanlings by So You Think sold for $130,000 and $80,000.

Other first season sires represented included Uncle Mo (sold up to $120,000), Smart Missile (up to $80,000), Canford Cliffs (up to $65,000), Master Of Design (up to $52,000) and Foxwedge (up to $50,000).

New Zealand pinhookers were busy snapping up quality Australian bred weanlings. Lyndhurst Farm went to $190,000 to buy Lot 163, a filly by Northern Meteor from Golden Pedigree that was sold by Lustre Lodge.

Michael Wallace went to $155,000 to secure the High Chaparral half-brother to 2014 South Australian Derby runner-up Scratchy Bottom from the Reavill Farm dispersal offerings.

The average price of broodmares sold in the Select Session was $54,640, which is 23% greater than the figure recorded for the combined Select and Super Select Session at the 2013 Easter Broodmare Sale. The 2014 sale's outstanding clearance rate of 84% is well up on the 75% recorded in April 2013.

Dariana (Lot 312) topped the Broodmare section when sold in foal to Street Cry for $800,000. Offered by Bell View Park Stud the Group 1 winner was purchased by Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock on behalf of long term client Bob Peters. Dariana is set to visit Pierro in the spring of 2014 with Peter’s commenting "Pierro was all speed and class so he'll compliment her beautifully.”

Belmont Bloodstock finished as the leading buyer at the Inglis Sale signing for 19 broodmares and three weanlings for a total spend of $2,678,000. James Harron was equally busy snapping up 16 Select Session mares for $1,481,000.

Bell View Park Stud finished as the leading vendor by average in the Select Broodmare Session having sold their four lots at an average of $377,500 thanks to Dariana ($800,000), Russeting ($390,000), Leamington ($250,000) and More Chickens ($70,000).

The leading broodmare vendor by aggregate was Tyreel Stud. Their Unreserved Dispersal of 22 mares netted $3,708,000 – an average of $168,545 for the high quality broodmare band.
