201 lots were sold on a strong day’s trading at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne August Thoroughbred Sale on Friday.
“A good crowd on a perfect Melbourne day bid strongly to give an 88% clearance at the August Sale today. Bidding was particularly strong on race fillies and mares suitable to go to stud this season with buyers from all over Australia and New Zealand being very competitive,” said Inglis Director Peter Heagney.
“The Darley horses were again very popular and we appreciate the support they give the Melbourne Sale. It was also pleasing to see new clients from China participating at the sale today,” added Heagney.
The day kicked off with the crowd running their eyes over six new additions to the Victorian stallion ranks for the upcoming breeding season in Fighting Sun, Fiorente, Polanski, Unusual Suspect, War and Unencumbered.
Selling then got underway with Group 2 placed race mare Oriental Ruby (Lot 204) topping the day when selling for $105,000. The five time winner was sold by Moloney Racing on behalf of her owners, which included her breeders John and Debbie Pallot of Hampton Heath Thoroughbreds.
“Oriental Ruby has given us a great ride, from planning her dam’s mating with Mark Dodemaide to selling her to Moloney Racing and retaining a share to race her up to Group level against Atlantic Jewel,” said a delighted John Pallot.
Race fillies and mares filled 10 of the top 12 spots on the day including $85,000 purchase Jesse’s Dream (Lot 138). The four-year-old sister to Eloping broke through for a three length maiden win at Geelong on Tuesday and today was purchased by Peter Morgan.
Darley’s draft was again popular with buyers, who snapped up their 19 lots for $556,7000. They included Sakitto (Lot 151) sold to Queensland for $64,000, Langara (Lot 148) sold to New Zealand for $55,000, Proverb (Lot 164) sold to Victoria for $52,500 and Entwined (Lot 145) sold to China for $45,000.
$97,000 from six stallion nominations donated by various studs (Lots 79 to 84) was raised to go to supporting the Victorian breeding industry through Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria (TBV). The nominations were to Helmet ($27,000), Starspangledbanner ($21,000), Fiorente ($16,000), Equiano ($12,000), Unencumbered ($11,000) and Written Tycoon ($11,000).
Group 3 winning stallion prospect Direct Charge (pictured) was sold as Lot 85 to stand at Oxley Island Thoroughbreds on the NSW mid-coast this coming season.
