The Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, to be held this Sunday and Monday, 19 and 20 April is renowned for its outstanding value, not to mention the $19 million in prizemoney and bonuses available for Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold nominated horses in Victoria. Recently, the sale has produced two particularly impressive stories of racetrack success.
The Big Dance is the heroine of a fairytale story for her trainer Danny Curran and a large group of owners. A $750 purchase from the Noor Elaine Farm draft at the 2014 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, The Big Dance (Oamaru Force x Curzon Dancer) won on debut in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush at Bendigo last month to the cheers of her local owners. Winning by the best part of three lengths, the two-year-old earned her connections $151,000 in prize money and a further $21,000 in bonuses.
Trainer Danny Curran still muses about securing the filly so cheaply.
“I had her picked out as a running type, and I was looking for a horse to run in the Inglis VOBIS Gold Race, it was just luck that she went for the price that she did,” said Curran.
For Curran, the chance to debut his filly came earlier than expected and she will now be aimed at the Spring Carnival, however the $100,000 Inglis VOBIS Gold Plate will be run over 1100m at Cranbourne on Sunday 21 June 2015.
“We’ll bring her back into work in June and the plan is that she’ll have her first start back in August, I’m confident the Flemington straight will really suit her,’’ Curran said.
The trainer is delighted by the response of the public to The Big Dance’s story, adding “the best thing about her is she has captured the imagination of Bendigo, it is amazing to be part of a story like this.”
Another story of debut success with a VOBIS Gold Sale purchase is that of 2013 graduate Lucky Liberty. A $17,000 purchase from the draft of Basinghall Farm for his young trainer Henry Dwyer, Lucky Liberty (Statue Of Liberty x Warcraft) began his career with a dominant win at Mornington, and backed it up with a further two consecutive wins all in impressive style.
Lucky Liberty’s third win at Flemington was Dwyer’s first victory at the famed track, but the horse’s success is special to him for other reasons as well.
“He’s not as fashionably bred as horses at other sales but he was a very nice type so he made my shortlist,” said Dwyer.
“The affordability of the horse meant it was a good opportunity to involve some first time owners and some mates from school. Each has a five or ten percent share and they’ve all had a ball,” said Dwyer.
There are plenty of opportunities to get into racehorse ownership at this year’s Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, with 362 lots catalogued to go through the auction ring as The Big Dance and Lucky Liberty did.
More than half the catalogue is already available for inspection at Inglis’ Oaklands sale complex on the outskirts of Melbourne. Access the full Vendor Parade Schedule HERE
