Magicool Breezes To Group 1 Glory

Inglis graduates shone on a glorious day in Queensland for the state’s biggest day of racing, winning the Group 1 BRC Queensland Derby and the Group 2 BRC Queensland Guineas at Doomben.

Mark Kavanagh’s striking colt Magicool (Fastnet Rock x Perfect Truth) notched up his first Group win with a dominant victory in the Group 1 BRC Queensland Derby, marking back-to-back wins for Inglis graduates in the race following Sonntag in 2014.

After narrowly missing out on a placing in the Group 1 SAJC Derby at Morphettville last month, an expert ride by James Winks helped Magicool take his earnings past $660,000 for his group of owners.

“They went really solid early, I had three-deep cover most of the race, but full credit to the horse, when I asked him he was there for me and that’s where the results come from,” Winks said.

Bred by Queensland's Hutchins Thoroughbreds, Magicool was knocked down to Mark Kavanagh Racing for $250,000 from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. Representative for the stable Levi Kavanagh was very positive about the performance of both horse and jockey.

“We came up here a week ago and had a few gallops around here to get him to settle in. He hit the front a bit too early in the SAJC Derby but it was a great run today,” said Kavanagh.

Kavanagh was circumspect on the colt’s future, alluding to a possible Cox Plate run in the spring, adding “The horse is still learning and he’s even going to be better next preparation. He might be a 2000m horse around the Valley hopefully, we’ll just wait and see how he goes, but this was definitely a good start,”

It has been a long time coming for Group 1 Blue Diamond runner-up Jabali (Exceed And Excel x Balalaika) but the colt finally broke through in the Group 2 BRC Queensland Guineas today. Bred by Andrew Calvert and consigned by Kornong Stud Farm at the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Jabali was a $220,000 purchase for his trainer Mick Price, and today took his earnings past $510,000 for a syndicate of owners that includes Eliza Park International and Sun Bloodstock.

Representing the Price Stable in Queensland, Racing Manager Matt Finn said of the result “Well obviously to win a Group race as your first race is always exciting for all owners, so it was a great result for all involved, everyone is very happy.”

Finn was quick to credit the ride of Jim Byrne, a highly accomplished jockey and Queensland local.

“Jim is a great rider up here, he’s ridden winners up here before, we’ve got a lot of faith in him and he got the job done today,”

Finn was conservative about the highly-credentialed colt’s immediate future, commenting “We’re not sure if we’ll push on, today was his seventh run, he’s obviously had a long prep so far so it will be good to see how he pulls up from here,”

Connections would hope Jabali will go on to emulate the feats of fellow Inglis Premier graduate Turffontein which went on to win two Group 1 races following his Queensland Guineas victory.
