Top New Zealand trainer Murray Baker has provided an update on dual Derby winner Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor-Centafit, by Centaine) who is set to resume in the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday week.
The New Zealand and Australian Derby winner is on a path towards the Melbourne Cup with his racing programme comprising the Makybe, the Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on 26 September, and then the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at the same venue two weeks later.
"He's coming along well. He'll race in the Makybe Diva at Flemington. The mile will probably be a bit short for him but we have to get him underway," Baker told Racing.com.
"Probably after that we'll race in the 1800 weight-for-age at Caulfield [the Underwood] , and then the Caulfield Stakes and hopefully the Melbourne Cup if he's showing form."
He added: "He's not a big heavy colt but he has certainly matured a lot. He's made the natural improvement."
Mongolian Khan is currently third favourite for the Melbourne Cup at $16 with TAB.com.au.
