Success Is Attainable For All At Easter

“Be not afraid of greatness” when searching through the catalogue of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, for outstanding results with Easter graduates continue to be achieved across a range of budgets by trainers, syndicators, owners, agents and pinhookers.

This season’s Group 1 wins of Vanbrugh and Politeness, plus the two-year-old stakes victories of Flying Artie and Selenia highlight the opportunities for buyers at $120,000 or less at Easter and the success of Session II.

$100,000 purchase Vanbrugh was a Group 1 winner in the spring just 18 months after his purchase. The colt, which has already won over $500,000, is being aimed at The Championships to add to his already considerable stud value as an elite son of sire-of-sires Encosta de Lago.

Politeness has not just earned $1 million more than her $115,000 price tag, but as a Group 1 winner with an Easter pedigree the mare holds considerable value as a broodmare, as do fellow stakes winning Easter fillies Fitocracy, Sabatini, Heatherly, Scratchy Bottom, Ondina, Loved Up and Selenia – which all could have been bought at Easter for $120,000 or less.

Selenia and Flying Artie are already proving to be real gems for their 2015 Easter Sale buyers as the stakes-winning pair head to the $3.5 million Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper. Selenia shot into contention for the world’s richest two-year-old event following a powerful stakes win at Flemington on the weekend, rocketing past her $30,000 price tag for trainer Robbie Griffiths.

Flying Artie was a $50,000 purchase by part-owner Paul Whelan and the colt is currently second favourite for the Golden Slipper following victory in the Group 3 MRC Blue Diamond Prelude before a fast finishing second to stablemate Extreme Choice in Group 1 MRC Blue Diamond Stakes. With a median price of $75,000 Session II, in which Flying Artie was offered, has established itself of the highest quality with other graduates such as Shamus Award, Mossfun, Fat Al, Faint Perfume and Response.

$50,000 Easter buy Response has been a goldmine for all her connections, having won two Group 1 races and $835,000 for owners Barrie and Midge Griffiths before selling her off the track for $840,000. Her first foal realised over $1 million before Response was re-sold for $1.5 million last year and her second foal, a colt by Exceed And Excel, will be offered as Lot 39 at the 2016 Easter Sale.

Even speedier results have been attained in recent months by pinhookers, with Easter purchases proving very popular at two-year-old sales in Australia and New Zealand. In 2015, the second top price of $280,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale was recorded by Muskoka Farm for a colt by O’Reilly that was secured for $100,000 at Easter just six months earlier. Also more than doubling their returns at two-year-old sales were Lyndhurst Farm, who paid $100,000 for a Savabeel colt they re-sold for NZ$230,000; and Diamond Lodge who collected NZ$160,000 for their $40,000 Foxwedge colt.

Success with an Easter graduate can be measured in many ways and Inglis is excited to offer 580 exceptional yearlings at the 2016 Easter Sale on 5, 6 and 7 April in Sydney. Yearlings will start arriving at Inglis’ Newmarket sales complex in the coming weeks and parades will begin around Tuesday 29 March.
